Peterbilt vs Mack: Choosing Between Rugged or Classic Styles

Let’s do a quick breakdown of Mack trucks vs Peterbilt trucks.

Mack is naturally the cheaper, more affordable truck to buy.

Peterbilt models come at a premium price point, but they're also packed with a rich array of driver-friendly features and plenty of cab space.

It makes sense. Peterbilt trucks are famous for their iconic appearance and cultural impact on trucking.

Mack, on the other hand, is far better known for its vocational day cab truck made for regional hauling. It sells very few long-haul sleeper model options.

One of their classic highway trucks is the CX 613 model series, often called the Vision or Pinnacle series, which we sell plenty of custom parts for.

A cross-comparable Peterbilt-equivalent would be the Peterbilt 386 (2006 – 2015)

However, Mack recently came out with an incredibly sleek modern-looking truck design, namely their newest production model, the Mack Pioneer (2025), an evolution from the Mack Anthem.

The one-to-one Peterbilt-equivalent is most likely the Peterbilt 579, which features a mix of classic design features and modern aerodynamic engineering.

The Mack Pioneer (Newest Class 8 Series)

The Mack Pioneer is the latest evolution of the Mack Anthem highway truck. This is Mack’s newest Class 8 on-highway truck model that features:

  • Max ride air suspension
  • 99” tall high-roof sleeper build for more walking space in the cabin
  • Command steering system
  • Mack MP 13 Engine
  • Optimized aerodynamic cab profile
  • 515 HP
  • 1,950 lb Torque
  • mDrive automated manual transmission (12-, 13, or 14-speed)
  • Multiple axle configurations: 4x2, 6x2, or 6x4
  • Sleeper dimensions: day cab or 44-inch, 64-inch, or 76-inch sleepers.

The Mack CX 613 (Mack Vision)

Mack CX613 Model

This is Mack’s classic highway truck from the early 2000s that later evolved into the Mack Pinnacle.

Major Specs:

  • Engine: Mack diesel 460hp
  • Suspension: Air ride
  • Eaton-Fuller manual: 10-speed, 13-speed, or 18-speed.
  • Axle configuration: 6x4 (tandem drive)
  • Sleeper: 60-inch mid-roof sleeper (in some 2004 models and 63-inch for 2006)
  • Narrow cab space

The Mack CXU613 (Mack Pinnacle)

Designed with an axle-forward configuration, and various sleeper height size options (48-inch flat top to 70-inch stand up sleeper).

The Engine:

  • Mack MP8 (13L diesel): 415–505 hp
  • Torque: 1,650–1,900 lb-ft
  • MP7 (11L) 325–425 hp, MP8HE (13L) 415–445 hp, and Cummins Westport ISX12 G (natural gas) up to 400 hp for certain configurations/solutions.

The Transmission:

  • Mack mDRIVE automated manual: 12-speed
  • Mack mDRIVE HD automated manual: 12 / 13 / 14-speed
  • Allison 4500 RDS automatic: 6-speed
  • Eaton-Fuller manual: 10 / 13 / 18-speed

Peterbilt 386

  • Transmission: Eaton Fuller RTLO-16913A, 13-speed overdrive manual (automatic is available in Eaton Fuller 10, 13, and 18-speed models)
  • Sleeper size: 48”, 63” and 70” (depending on year/setup)
  • Engine (type / hp / torque): Cummins ISX15 — 450 hp @ 1,800 rpm and 1,650 lb-ft @ 1,200 rpm.
  • Axle configuration: Tandem axle sleeper tractor (typical 6x4 in this configuration)
  • Axles / ratings: Front 13,200 lb (Dana Spicer E1322I) + Rear 40,000 lb (Dana Spicer DSP 40)

Peterbilt 579

Built for aerodynamic efficiency, it utilizes a sculpted nose, flush headlights, and extensive fairings. It features two hood options, 118-inch BBC and 124-inch BBC.

  • Transmission: 11/13/18 speeds
  • Sleeper size: 44-inches to 80-inches height
  • Axle & suspension ratings (factory ranges): Front 12,000–14,600 lb; Rear 21,000–46,000 lb (lift axles available)
  • Engine (type/hp/torque): PACCAR MX-13 (12.9L) — up to 510 hp / 1,850 lb-ft, PACCAR MX-11 (10.8L) — up to 445 hp / 1,700 lb-ft, or Cummins X15 (15L) — up to 605 hp / 2,050 lb-ft.

Mack Vision vs Peterbilt 386

The verdict: Peterbilt 386 is ideal for max hp and higher resale value. Mack Vision is preferred for modern interior and lower price point.

Power and Performance

Peterbilt has a higher performance ceiling in raw power due to the Cummins or CAT engine, 600hp. Mack tops out around 505hp.

Mack engines have stronger low-end pulling power for large payloads while Peterbilt engines, overall, operate better at higher RPM.

Torque: Depending on the Peterbilt’s factory specs, it delivers more torque than Mack.

Transmission: both utilize 13-speed and 18-speed Eaton manuals.

Suspension: Peterbilt focuses on a smooth ride with low air leaf systems, while Mack focuses on stability, using the Camelback or Mack Air Ride suspensions to handle rough driving conditions.

Cab Design

The Peterbilt has a narrower aluminum cab and classic dash setup. Mack has a wider cab with a wraparound dash design. As far as the sleeper space, both can be converted to be mid-rise sleeper areas and high-rise sleepers.

Aerodynamic Features: both have a sloped hoods, set-back axles, and integrated wind fairings.

Mack Pioneer vs Peterbilt 579

Verdict: For more factor-engine flexibility, Peterbilt 579 is the stronger option, as it offers more horsepower and a higher resale value.

Which to Choose?

The Pioneer is better when you want a wide cab space and better steering experience.

The Peterbilt 579 is better if you want maximum hp, lightweight cab, and a longer sleeper bed.

Mack definitely has the wider sleeper cab space (85-inch shoulder to shoulder length), active assist steering system to help with driver fatigue, and it boasts stronger fuel economy gains (6.1-9.6% increase). Peterbilt 579 claims to give 7%.

Mack has a more durable high-steel cab, but it’s not as lightweight as Peterbilt’s riveted aluminum cab.

Both models offer flagship livable sleepers, namely Peterbilt’s UltraLoft versus Mack’s High-Roof.

The UltraLoft prioritizes an open-concept aesthetic with more storage space. The High-Roof has a reclining lower bunk bed that can transform into a sofa for lounging versatility.

The Dash Layout: Peterbilt has the 15-inch digital gauge cluster and Mack uses a 12-inch display with traditional tactile switch knobs.

Best Aftermarket Upgrades for Mack Pioneer

Performance: High-flow mufflers to reduce backpressure on the MP13 engine.
