Peterbilt 389 Glider Interior Acc.

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 389 Glider Interior Accessories

What exactly fits a Peterbilt 389 glider versus a standard 389?

Most interior accessories for standard Peterbilt 389 models (2008-present) will fit glider kits, as the cab structure remains the same. However, glider kits may have variations in dash configurations depending on the engine and transmission setup. Always verify your specific dash layout, especially for gauge panels and switch plates. Items like floor mats, seat covers, and door panels are typically universal between gliders and standard 389s.

Are the interior panels and trim pieces made of ABS plastic or fiberglass?

Most aftermarket interior panels for the 389 are manufactured from high-grade ABS plastic, which offers better durability and fit compared to fiberglass. OEM-style replacement panels typically use the same ABS material as factory parts. Chrome and stainless steel trim pieces are genuine metal, not plastic chrome. For painted panels, the ABS plastic base accepts automotive paint well and resists cracking better than fiberglass alternatives.

How difficult is it to install dash panels and interior trim without removing the entire dashboard?

Many interior accessories can be installed without full dash removal. Gauge panels typically require removing 4-8 screws and disconnecting the gauge cluster. Switch panels pop out with gentle prying. Door panels need about 6-10 fasteners removed. Complete dash top replacement is more involved, requiring 2-3 hours and removal of the instrument cluster, HVAC controls, and multiple mounting bolts. Most drivers can handle basic trim installation with common hand tools.

Will aftermarket shifter boots and knobs work with 13-speed and 18-speed Eaton transmissions?

Yes, most universal shifter boots fit both 13-speed and 18-speed Eaton Fuller transmissions commonly found in 389 gliders. The boot mounting ring diameter is standardized at approximately 4.5 inches. Shifter knobs with 9/16"-18 threads fit most Eaton shifters. For splitter-equipped transmissions, ensure any custom knob has clearance for the splitter button operation. Measure your current setup if running non-standard transmission configurations.

Do wood grain and chrome interior kits come with mounting hardware and instructions?

Quality interior trim kits include necessary mounting hardware such as clips, screws, and double-sided automotive tape where appropriate. Basic installation guides are typically provided, though they may be diagram-based rather than detailed written instructions. Wood grain dash kits are pre-cut to fit specific areas and use 3M automotive adhesive backing. Chrome accent pieces usually attach with existing factory mounting points or included hardware. Professional installation is recommended for complete interior overhauls.
