Freightliner Cabover Bumpers

Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FLT Cabover Bumpers

What years and models of Freightliner FLT cabovers do these bumpers fit?

Our Freightliner FLT cabover bumpers are designed to fit FLT models from 1984 through 1991, including the FLT 86, FLT 8664, and FLT 120 series. Each bumper listing specifies exact model compatibility. We recommend checking your OEM and model designation before ordering, as some mid-year production changes may affect fitment. If you're unsure about compatibility, contact our support team with your truck's year, model, and OEM for verification.

Are these bumpers made from chrome-plated steel or stainless steel, and which is better for my needs?

We offer both chrome-plated steel and 304 stainless steel options. Chrome-plated bumpers provide a mirror-like finish at a lower cost but require regular polishing and may show rust if the chrome chips. Stainless steel bumpers are more expensive initially but resist corrosion better and maintain their appearance with minimal maintenance. For trucks in coastal areas or regions using road salt, we recommend stainless steel. For show trucks or fair-weather drivers, chrome-plated options work well with proper care.

Do I need special brackets or hardware to install these bumpers, or can I use my existing mounting points?

Most of our FLT cabover bumpers are designed to use your truck's existing mounting points and brackets. However, if your original brackets are damaged or rusted, you'll need replacements. Each bumper includes grade 8 mounting bolts, but brackets are sold separately. Some aftermarket bumpers may require slight adjustments to mounting holes. We recommend test-fitting before final installation and having a second person help position the bumper during mounting.

What's the weight difference between OEM and aftermarket bumpers, and will it affect my front axle weight?

Aftermarket stainless steel bumpers typically weigh 15-25 pounds more than OEM chrome-plated versions. Standard FLT bumpers weigh approximately 85-95 pounds, while heavy-duty stainless options can reach 110-120 pounds. This weight difference is minimal for front axle loading but can slightly improve stability. If you're concerned about weight distribution or are near axle capacity, consider our standard-weight options or aluminum bumpers where available.

Can I add fog lights or additional accessories to these bumpers after installation?

Yes, most of our FLT cabover bumpers come with pre-drilled fog light mounting holes that accept standard 4-inch round lights. If your chosen bumper doesn't have pre-drilled holes, professional drilling is possible but may void the warranty on chrome-plated models. Stainless steel bumpers can be modified more easily. We offer bumper-mounted light bars and step plates as bolt-on accessories. Always ensure any additions don't exceed local regulations for width or projection beyond the vehicle frame.
