Peterbilt 388 Radiators
Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 388 Radiators
What years and engine configurations are these radiators compatible with?
Our Peterbilt 388 radiators are designed to fit model years 2005-2015. Compatibility depends on your specific engine type - we carry radiators for Caterpillar C15/C13, Cummins ISX/ISM, and Detroit DD15 engines. Always verify your engine serial number and cooling system configuration before ordering, as some 388s have different core sizes depending on whether they have standard or heavy-duty cooling packages.
Are these aluminum or copper/brass radiators, and which is better for my truck?
We stock both aluminum and copper/brass radiators for the Peterbilt 388. Aluminum radiators are lighter (typically 40-50% less weight) and offer excellent cooling efficiency with proper maintenance. Copper/brass radiators are heavier but can be repaired more easily if damaged and tend to last longer in severe service conditions. Most owner-operators prefer aluminum for fuel efficiency, while vocational trucks in construction or logging often choose copper/brass for durability.
What are the most common installation challenges and how long does it take?
Professional installation typically takes 3-4 hours. The main challenges include properly aligning the CAC (charge air cooler) connections, ensuring all mounting bushings are in good condition, and correctly routing the overflow and transmission cooler lines. Many customers report difficulty with the lower mounting bolts due to limited access. We recommend replacing all coolant hoses, clamps, and the radiator cap during installation to prevent future issues.
Do these radiators come with mounting hardware and what additional parts might I need?
Our radiators include the core unit with inlet/outlet tanks but do not include mounting hardware, hoses, or clamps. You will need to reuse existing mounting brackets and bushings or purchase new ones if worn. Most installations also require new upper and lower radiator hoses, constant torque clamps, a radiator cap, and approximately 12-15 gallons of coolant. We recommend having thread sealant on hand for the transmission cooler fittings.
What warranty coverage is provided and what voids the warranty?
Our Peterbilt 388 radiators come with a 2-year unlimited mileage warranty against manufacturing defects. The warranty covers leaks, poor fitment, and premature failure under normal operating conditions. Common warranty exclusions include damage from improper installation, running without coolant, contaminated coolant, excessive system pressure (over 20 PSI), and physical damage from road debris. Always pressure test your cooling system before installation to ensure other components are not causing excessive pressure that could damage your new radiator.
