Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 357/378 Cab, Sleeper & Cowl Panels
Will these panels fit my specific year and model Peterbilt 357 or 378?
Our cab, sleeper, and cowl panels are designed to fit Peterbilt 357 models from 1987-2002 and Peterbilt 378 models from 1986-2002. However, some panels may have slight variations between early and late production years. We recommend checking your VIN or contacting us with your truck's specific year and any modifications to ensure proper fitment, especially if your truck has aftermarket accessories or custom modifications.
What gauge metal are these panels made from, and will they rust?
Most of our replacement panels are manufactured from 16-18 gauge steel, matching or exceeding OEM specifications. The panels come with a primer coating that provides basic rust protection during shipping and storage, but you'll need to properly prep, prime, and paint them after installation for long-term corrosion resistance. We also carry some aluminum options for specific applications if weight or corrosion is a primary concern.
How difficult is the installation, and what tools will I need?
Installing cab and cowl panels typically requires intermediate to advanced fabrication skills. You'll need basic hand tools, a drill with metal bits, aviation snips or a cutoff wheel, and ideally a MIG welder for proper installation. Most panels require cutting out the damaged section and welding in the replacement. Sleeper panels may involve additional steps like removing interior components. Professional installation is recommended if you're not comfortable with metal fabrication and welding.
Do these panels come painted or ready to install?
Our panels come in primer finish only - they are not painted to match your truck's color. The primer protects the metal during shipping but is not a final finish. You'll need to sand, prep, prime with a high-quality automotive primer, and paint the panels to match your truck. This allows for proper color matching and ensures the best adhesion and longevity of your paint job.
What's the difference between aftermarket and OEM panels for my Peterbilt?
Aftermarket panels are typically 20-40% less expensive than OEM while maintaining similar quality and fit. Our aftermarket panels are stamped to match original specifications and mounting points. The main differences you might notice are minor variations in primer quality and occasionally slight adjustments needed during fitment. OEM panels are available by special order but have longer lead times and higher costs. Most customers find aftermarket panels perfectly suitable for repairs and restorations.
