Mack RD Truck Frame Light Bars & Filler Panels
Frequently Asked Questions About Mack RD Truck Frame Light Bars & Filler Panels
Will these light bars and filler panels fit my specific Mack RD model year?
Our Mack RD frame light bars and filler panels are designed to fit Mack RD models from 1990 to 2004. However, there can be variations between early and late production years. The primary difference is in the mounting hole patterns - pre-1997 models typically have a different bolt spacing than 1997-2004 models. We recommend checking your existing mounting points or contacting our support team with your VIN number to ensure proper fitment before ordering.
What material are these light bars made from, and how do they hold up against rust?
Most of our Mack RD light bars are constructed from heavy-duty steel with either a chrome-plated or powder-coated finish. Chrome options provide excellent corrosion resistance but require regular cleaning to maintain their shine. Powder-coated options offer superior chip resistance and come with a 3-year warranty against rust-through. For maximum durability in harsh conditions, we also carry stainless steel options that provide lifetime corrosion resistance without the maintenance requirements of chrome.
Do I need to drill new holes or make modifications to install these light bars?
In most cases, our light bars are designed as direct replacements that utilize your existing frame mounting points - no drilling required. However, if you're adding lights where none existed before, you may need to drill holes for light mounting and wiring. The filler panels are typically bolt-on installations using existing holes. Each product includes detailed instructions, and installation usually takes 2-3 hours with basic hand tools. Some customers report needing to slightly enlarge mounting holes on older trucks due to frame wear or previous repairs.
What's the difference between light bars with pre-drilled holes versus blank light bars?
Pre-drilled light bars come with factory-spaced holes designed for standard 4-inch round lights, typically accommodating 3-7 lights depending on bar length. These save installation time but limit your lighting configuration options. Blank light bars offer complete customization - you can drill holes for any light size, spacing, or configuration you prefer. Choose pre-drilled if you want a standard setup with common 4-inch lights. Choose blank if you're installing LED light bars, larger lights, or want a specific custom spacing.
Can I use these light bars with LED lights, or are they only for incandescent?
Our light bars work perfectly with both LED and incandescent lights. LED lights actually offer several advantages: they draw less power, generate less heat, and last longer. When switching to LEDs, ensure your lights are DOT-approved for your application. You may need to add load resistors or an LED-compatible flasher relay if converting turn signals or hazard lights to LED. The mounting is identical for both light types - just ensure the light diameter matches your pre-drilled holes or plan accordingly if drilling a blank bar.
