Frequently Asked Questions About Mack CH/CHN/CHU Truck Frame Steps & Accessories
Will these frame steps fit my specific Mack CH series truck model and year?
Our frame steps are designed to fit Mack CH, CHN, and CHU models from 1988 to 2007. However, fitment can vary based on your truck's specific configuration, including wheelbase, exhaust setup, and any aftermarket modifications. We recommend checking the product descriptions for exact measurements and mounting hole patterns. If you're unsure, contact our customer service team with your VIN number, and we'll help verify compatibility before you order.
What's the difference between aluminum and steel frame steps, and which should I choose?
Aluminum steps are lighter weight (typically 40-50% lighter than steel), won't rust, and are easier to polish for a chrome-like appearance. Steel steps are more durable against impacts, less expensive, and better suited for heavy-duty applications or rough job sites. Most over-the-road drivers prefer aluminum for weight savings and appearance, while construction and vocational trucks often benefit from steel's durability. Both materials support the same weight capacity when properly installed.
How difficult is the installation, and what tools will I need?
Installation typically takes 1-2 hours per side for someone with basic mechanical skills. You'll need a drill with metal bits (usually 3/8" and 1/2"), a socket set, torque wrench, and safety equipment. Most steps require drilling 2-4 mounting holes per bracket into your frame rails. Some installations may require minor trimming to clear exhaust pipes or fuel tanks. We include detailed instructions with measurements, and many customers successfully complete the installation in their driveway or shop.
Do these steps come with mounting brackets and hardware, or do I need to purchase separately?
Most of our frame steps come as complete kits including the steps, mounting brackets, and grade 8 hardware. However, some universal or custom applications may require brackets to be purchased separately. Each product listing clearly states what's included in the kit. If you're replacing existing steps, you may be able to reuse your current brackets if they're in good condition and compatible with the new steps.
How do I maintain the finish on chrome, polished aluminum, or powder-coated steps?
Chrome steps require regular cleaning with chrome polish and should be waxed monthly to prevent pitting. Polished aluminum needs aluminum polish and can be clear-coated for easier maintenance. Powder-coated steps are the most low-maintenance - just wash with soap and water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners on any finish. In winter climates, rinse steps frequently to remove road salt. With proper care, chrome and polished finishes can maintain their appearance for 5+ years, while powder coating typically lasts 7-10 years.
