Frequently Asked Questions About International WorkStar Steering Parts & Acc.
Will these steering parts fit my specific WorkStar model year?
Most of our steering components are designed to fit International WorkStar models from 2008-2017. However, there can be variations based on your truck's configuration and engine type. We recommend checking your VIN number or calling our tech support at 1-888-875-7787 with your truck's details. Common fitment issues occur with pre-2008 models that use different steering box mounting patterns.
What's the difference between OEM and aftermarket steering boxes, and which should I choose?
OEM steering boxes typically last 300,000-500,000 miles and come with factory warranties, while quality aftermarket options from brands like TRW and Lares offer 70-80% of OEM performance at about half the cost. If your truck is still under warranty or used for heavy-duty commercial applications, stick with OEM. For older trucks or moderate use, aftermarket boxes provide excellent value. All our aftermarket options meet or exceed SAE standards.
Do I need special tools or experience to install these steering components?
Basic steering component replacements like tie rod ends and drag links require standard hand tools and can be completed in 2-3 hours with moderate mechanical experience. However, steering box replacement requires a pitman arm puller, proper alignment tools, and usually takes 4-6 hours. We strongly recommend professional installation for steering boxes to ensure proper adjustment and avoid safety issues. Most shops charge $300-500 for steering box installation.
How do I know if my steering problem is the box, pump, or linkage?
Check for these common symptoms: Excessive play (more than 2 inches at the steering wheel) usually indicates worn tie rods or drag links. Hard steering or whining noises point to power steering pump issues. Fluid leaks around the steering box or binding when turning typically mean the box needs replacement. Start with the least expensive components first - inspect tie rod ends and ball joints before replacing the steering box.
What power steering fluid should I use, and how often should I change it?
International WorkStar trucks require Dexron III/Mercon ATF or equivalent power steering fluid - never use standard power steering fluid as it can damage seals. Change fluid every 100,000 miles or 2 years under normal conditions, or every 50,000 miles for severe duty applications. If your fluid is dark brown or smells burnt, flush the system immediately. Keep fluid levels between MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir when engine is warm.
