What years and specific models do these hoods fit?
These hoods are designed to fit International S2200, S2300, S2400, S2500, and S2600 models manufactured from 1989 through 2004. The mounting points and dimensions are identical across these model years, but always verify your VIN and model number before ordering. Note that hoods for pre-1989 models have different mounting configurations and are not compatible.
Are these hoods made of fiberglass or steel, and how does the weight compare to OEM?
We offer both fiberglass and steel hood options. Fiberglass hoods typically weigh 40-60% less than OEM steel hoods (approximately 80-100 lbs versus 180-220 lbs), making them easier to handle during installation and reducing strain on hinges. Steel aftermarket hoods match OEM weight and thickness specifications. Fiberglass hoods require more careful handling but offer excellent corrosion resistance, while steel hoods provide superior impact resistance.
What additional parts or modifications are needed for installation?
Most replacement hoods are designed as direct bolt-on replacements using your existing hinges, latches, and support hardware. However, you should inspect and potentially replace hood hinges if they show wear, as new hood weight distribution can stress worn components. Some customers also need new hood bumpers, grille mounting brackets, or weather stripping. No cutting or drilling is typically required unless you're adding aftermarket accessories like bug shields or chrome trim.
Do these hoods come primed or painted, and what prep work is required?
Most aftermarket hoods arrive in primer only and require professional painting to match your truck. The primer coat protects during shipping but isn't suitable as a final finish. Steel hoods typically come with a gray primer, while fiberglass hoods feature a black gel coat or primer. Plan for sanding, additional primer coats if needed, and professional paint application. Some vendors offer pre-painted options for common colors at additional cost.
How do aftermarket hoods affect hood alignment and gaps?
Quality aftermarket hoods maintain OEM specifications for proper alignment, but minor adjustments are often necessary during installation. Allow 2-3 hours for proper fitting, including hinge adjustment, latch alignment, and gap spacing. Common adjustment points include the hood hinges (for height and forward/backward positioning) and the rubber bumpers (for proper closure height). Having a second person assist with alignment makes the process much easier and helps achieve uniform panel gaps.
