Frequently Asked Questions About International S1700-S1900 Sleeper & Related
What years and models are compatible with these S1700-S1900 bumpers?
Our S1700-S1900 bumpers are designed to fit International S-Series trucks from 1979 through 1993, including the S1700, S1800, S1900, S2100, and S2200 models. These bumpers are compatible with both single axle and tandem configurations. However, sleeper cab models may require additional brackets or modifications depending on your specific truck configuration. We recommend checking your VIN or contacting us with your truck's year and model for exact fitment confirmation.
Are these bumpers made from chrome-plated steel or stainless steel?
Most of our S-Series bumpers are manufactured from heavy-duty 16-gauge steel with triple chrome plating for maximum durability and shine. We also offer select models in 304 stainless steel, which provides excellent corrosion resistance without the need for chrome plating. Chrome-plated bumpers typically cost less but require more maintenance, while stainless steel options offer longer-lasting protection against rust and pitting, especially in harsh weather conditions or areas with road salt exposure.
How difficult is the installation process, and what tools are required?
Installation typically takes 2-4 hours with basic hand tools. You'll need a socket set (typically 3/4" and 7/8"), wrenches, and a torque wrench. Most bumpers bolt directly to existing mounting points using the factory brackets. The main challenges customers report include: aligning heavy bumpers during solo installation (a second person is highly recommended), accessing tight mounting bolts behind the bumper, and occasionally needing to slightly enlarge mounting holes on older trucks due to frame wear. Detailed installation instructions are included with each bumper.
What's the difference between OEM-style and aftermarket designs?
OEM-style bumpers match the original factory specifications with the traditional curved design and standard mounting points. Aftermarket options include Texas-style square bumpers, rolled-end designs, and models with additional light cutouts or step plates. While OEM-style maintains the classic S-Series appearance, aftermarket designs often provide added functionality like integrated tow hooks, wider profiles for better protection, or pre-drilled holes for auxiliary lighting. Both styles use the same mounting system and provide equal protection.
How do I prevent rust and maintain the chrome finish?
Chrome bumpers require regular maintenance to prevent pitting and rust, especially around mounting holes and edges. We recommend washing with mild soap monthly, applying chrome polish every 2-3 months, and using a quality wax or sealant for added protection. Pay special attention to the back side of the bumper where road debris accumulates. For winter driving, rinse salt residue frequently. Small rust spots can be addressed with fine steel wool and chrome polish, but deep pitting requires professional rechroming. Stainless steel bumpers need less maintenance but should still be cleaned regularly to maintain their appearance.
