Frequently Asked Questions About International S1700-S1900 Fuel Tank Accessories
Will these fuel tank straps fit my specific International S-Series truck model and year?
Our fuel tank straps and mounting hardware are designed to fit International S1700, S1800, and S1900 models from 1979 through 2001. However, tank configurations can vary based on whether you have a single or dual tank setup, and tank capacity (50, 75, or 100 gallons). We recommend checking your existing strap length and mounting hole spacing before ordering. If you're unsure, contact us with your VIN number and we can verify compatibility.
What's the difference between aluminum and steel fuel tank steps, and which should I choose?
Aluminum tank steps are lighter weight (about 40% less than steel), won't rust, and are ideal for weight-conscious drivers or those in salt-heavy regions. Steel steps are more budget-friendly and extremely durable but require periodic maintenance to prevent rust. Both options support up to 300 pounds and use the same mounting points. For harsh winter conditions or coastal areas, we recommend aluminum. For maximum durability at the lowest cost, steel is your best choice.
Can I install these fuel tank accessories myself, or do I need special tools?
Most fuel tank accessories like steps, straps, and brackets can be installed with basic hand tools including wrenches, sockets, and a drill for any new mounting holes. Tank strap replacement typically takes 1-2 hours per side. Fuel tank steps usually require 30-45 minutes to install. The most challenging part is often accessing tight spaces, so having a creeper and good lighting helps. Always support the fuel tank with a jack when replacing straps for safety.
Are aftermarket fuel tank sending units as reliable as OEM parts?
Our aftermarket sending units meet or exceed OEM specifications and typically last 5-7 years with proper installation. The key difference is price - aftermarket units cost about 50-70% less than dealer parts. Make sure to use dielectric grease on electrical connections and replace the tank seal/gasket during installation to prevent leaks. Some customers report more accurate fuel readings with new aftermarket units compared to worn OEM units.
What size fuel cap do I need, and are locking caps worth it?
International S-Series trucks typically use either a 4-inch or 5-inch diameter fuel cap, depending on your tank manufacturer (Navistar vs. aftermarket). Check your existing cap or measure the filler neck opening. Locking caps are highly recommended if you park in unsecured areas or have experienced fuel theft. Our locking caps add about $15-25 to the cost but can save hundreds in stolen fuel. All our caps are vented to prevent tank vacuum issues.
