Frequently Asked Questions About International ProStar Fuel Tank Steps
What material are ProStar fuel tank steps made from, and will they rust or corrode over time?
Most ProStar fuel tank steps are manufactured from either polished stainless steel or heavy-duty aluminum. Stainless steel options offer superior corrosion resistance and maintain their shine with minimal maintenance, while aluminum steps are lightweight and naturally resistant to rust. Both materials are designed to withstand road salt, weather exposure, and diesel fuel contact. For maximum longevity, we recommend stainless steel steps for trucks operating in harsh winter conditions or coastal areas.
Will these fuel tank steps fit my specific ProStar model year, and are there different sizes available?
ProStar fuel tank steps are designed to fit model years 2008-2017, but mounting configurations can vary based on your specific tank size and placement. Most steps come in standard lengths of 26", 50", and 70" to accommodate different tank configurations. Before ordering, measure the distance between your tank mounting brackets to ensure proper fit. Some 2017+ models may require additional mounting hardware due to updated tank designs. Contact our support team with your VIN if you need help confirming compatibility.
How difficult is the installation process, and what tools will I need?
Installation typically takes 1-2 hours and requires basic hand tools including a socket set, drill with metal bits, and measuring tape. Most fuel tank steps use existing mounting points, but some applications may require drilling 2-4 new holes. The most challenging aspect is usually accessing the underside of the tank for bracket installation. We strongly recommend having a second person assist with positioning and support during installation. Professional installation typically costs $75-150 if you prefer not to DIY.
What's the difference between flat, teardrop, and louvered step styles?
Flat steps provide a clean, classic look and maximum stepping surface area but may accumulate water or ice. Teardrop (or bubble) steps feature raised sections that improve traction and water drainage while adding visual depth. Louvered steps have stamped openings that provide excellent grip and allow debris to fall through, making them ideal for muddy or snowy conditions. All styles support the same weight capacity (typically 300-500 lbs), so selection comes down to personal preference and operating conditions.
Do fuel tank steps affect ground clearance or fuel tank capacity?
Properly installed fuel tank steps typically extend 2-3 inches below the bottom of your fuel tank and should not significantly impact ground clearance on standard height ProStar trucks. They do not affect fuel capacity as they mount to the exterior tank brackets. However, if your truck is lowered or frequently operates on rough terrain, measure your current ground clearance before installation. Some drivers in extreme off-road applications opt for fold-up or removable step options to prevent damage.
