International IH Cabover Brake Chambers & Acc.
Frequently Asked Questions About International IH Cabover Brake Chambers & Acc.
Will these brake chambers fit my specific International Cabover model and year?
Our brake chambers are designed to fit International IH Cabover models from the 1960s through the 1990s, including popular models like the CO-4000, CO-8190, and Transtar CO-4070B. However, brake chamber sizing can vary based on your truck's GVWR and axle configuration. We recommend checking your existing chamber's clamp type (standard or long stroke) and measuring the mounting bracket spacing before ordering. If you're unsure, contact us with your VIN or model number, and we'll help verify compatibility.
What's the difference between Type 20, Type 24, and Type 30 brake chambers?
The type number refers to the effective area of the diaphragm in square inches, which determines the force output. Type 20 chambers are typically used on front axles and lighter applications, Type 24 on medium-duty rear axles, and Type 30 on heavy-duty rear axles or when extra braking force is needed. Your truck's original specifications will indicate the correct type, but upgrading to a larger chamber may require adjusting slack adjusters and ensuring adequate air system capacity.
Are these brake chambers DOT approved and what about corrosion resistance?
All brake chambers we carry meet or exceed FMVSS-121 DOT requirements and are manufactured to SAE J1817 standards. Most feature either powder-coated or zinc-plated steel housings for corrosion resistance. For trucks operating in harsh environments or winter road conditions, we recommend selecting chambers with welded steel housings and reinforced mounting studs, as these tend to last longer than aluminum alternatives in cabover applications where road spray exposure is higher.
Can I replace just one brake chamber, or should I replace them in pairs?
While it's possible to replace a single failed chamber, we strongly recommend replacing brake chambers in axle pairs to maintain balanced braking performance. Mismatched chambers can cause uneven brake application, leading to brake pull, premature wear, and potential safety issues. This is especially critical on International Cabovers due to their shorter wheelbase and weight distribution characteristics.
What additional parts do I need for a complete brake chamber installation?
A proper installation typically requires new clevis pins and bushings, air line fittings (usually 3/8" or 1/2" NPT), and fresh mounting hardware if your existing bolts show corrosion. You should also inspect and potentially replace the slack adjusters, especially if converting from manual to automatic adjusters. Don't forget to check your pushrod length - International Cabovers often require specific pushrod lengths that differ from conventional trucks. We offer complete installation kits that include all necessary hardware for your specific application.
