Frequently Asked Questions About International DuraStar Steering Parts & Acc.
What model years are these steering parts compatible with?
Most aftermarket steering components for the International DuraStar are designed to fit model years 2007-2018, which covers the majority of the 4200, 4300, and 4400 series trucks. However, there were minor changes in steering geometry between pre-2013 and post-2013 models. Always verify your specific VIN and model year before ordering, as some power steering pumps and gear boxes differ between early and late production runs.
Are these steering parts OEM quality or aftermarket replacements?
We carry both genuine International OEM parts and high-quality aftermarket alternatives. OEM parts typically use forged steel components with factory-spec tolerances, while our aftermarket options from manufacturers like TRW and Moog often feature upgraded materials such as heat-treated alloy steel and improved seal designs. Many fleet operators report that quality aftermarket tie rod ends and drag links actually outlast OEM parts in heavy-duty applications.
What are the most common steering problems on DuraStar trucks?
Based on customer feedback, the most frequent issues are worn tie rod ends (typically showing play around 150,000-200,000 miles), leaking power steering pumps, and loose steering gear boxes. Warning signs include excessive steering wheel play, uneven tire wear on the front axle, and power steering fluid leaks near the pump or gear box. Regular greasing of tie rod ends and drag links every 5,000-7,500 miles can significantly extend component life.
Can I install these steering parts myself or do I need special tools?
While basic components like tie rod ends and drag links can be replaced with standard shop tools (including a ball joint separator and torque wrench), proper alignment is critical. You'll need to torque tie rod castle nuts to 120-140 ft-lbs and drag link nuts to 160-180 ft-lbs. Power steering pumps require specific pulley pullers and installers. Most importantly, any steering work requires a professional front-end alignment afterward to prevent premature tire wear and ensure safe handling.
How do I identify which steering gear box I need?
DuraStar trucks use either TRW TAS65 or Sheppard M100 steering gear boxes, depending on the model and GVWR. Check the metal tag on your existing gear box for the part number, or look for casting numbers on the housing. The TAS65 typically has 4 mounting bolts in a square pattern, while the M100 uses 3 bolts in a triangular configuration. Input shaft spline count (usually 36 or 42 splines) and sector shaft diameter (1.25" or 1.5") must match exactly for proper fitment.
