Frequently Asked Questions About International 9900/i/ix Cab Lights
Will these cab lights fit my specific International 9900 model year?
Our cab lights are designed to fit International 9900, 9900i, and 9900ix models from 1987 through current production years. The mounting pattern has remained consistent across these model years. However, some 2008+ models with the Eagle trim package may require minor drilling adjustments due to slight roof contour changes. Always verify your exact model designation (9900, 9900i, or 9900ix) before ordering, as the "i" and "ix" variants have different roof profiles that affect light positioning.
What tools and skills do I need to install these cab lights myself?
Installation requires basic hand tools including a drill with 3/4" and 1/8" bits, wire strippers, crimping tool, and silicone sealant. Most installations take 2-3 hours. You'll need to drill five holes per light assembly and run wiring to your existing clearance light circuit. While the job is DIY-friendly, proper sealing is critical to prevent leaks. We recommend using butyl tape under the gaskets plus a bead of clear RTV silicone around each light base. If you're uncomfortable drilling into your cab roof, professional installation typically runs $150-300.
Are these LED or incandescent, and what's the real difference in brightness?
We offer both LED and incandescent options. LED cab lights produce approximately 300 lumens per unit versus 75 lumens for incandescent, making them roughly 4 times brighter. LEDs also draw 80% less power (0.5 amps total for a 5-light set versus 2.5 amps for incandescent) and last 50,000+ hours compared to 2,000 hours for traditional bulbs. The LED units are completely sealed with no replaceable parts, while incandescent versions allow bulb replacement but require periodic resealing.
What styles and lens colors meet DOT requirements?
DOT requires amber lenses for all forward and side-facing cab clearance lights on vehicles over 80 inches wide. We offer several DOT-compliant styles including the classic teardrop design, rectangular Peterbilt-style, and round button lights. Chrome, black powder coat, and polished stainless steel bases are available. All our amber lenses are SAE/DOT stamped. Clear or smoked lenses are for off-road use only. The most popular combination is chrome teardrop with amber LED for the classic long-haul look.
How do I prevent water leaks after installation?
Water intrusion is the number one complaint with aftermarket cab light installation. Prevention starts with proper hole placement - avoid drilling near existing roof seams or within 2 inches of the windshield. Use a step drill bit to create clean holes without metal burrs. Apply a continuous ring of butyl tape to each light base before mounting, then seal the perimeter with clear 100% silicone (not latex) caulk. Run a bead of silicone inside the cab around each wire grommet as well. Re-inspect and refresh the silicone annually, especially if you frequently use high-pressure truck washes.
