Frequently Asked Questions About GMC Brigadier Universal Elbows & Piping
What size exhaust pipes and elbows fit my GMC Brigadier, and are they truly universal?
Most GMC Brigadier trucks use 5-inch diameter exhaust systems, though some models may have 4-inch setups. Our universal elbows work with standard pipe sizes from 4 to 6 inches. Before ordering, measure your existing exhaust pipe outer diameter to ensure proper fit. While labeled "universal," these components are designed specifically for heavy-duty truck applications and will fit GMC Brigadier models from 1978-1988, as well as other similar Class 8 trucks with matching pipe diameters.
Are these elbows made from aluminized or stainless steel, and how long will they last?
We offer both aluminized steel and 304 stainless steel options. Aluminized steel elbows typically last 3-5 years under normal driving conditions and cost less upfront. Stainless steel elbows can last 10+ years and resist corrosion better, especially in areas with road salt or coastal environments. For GMC Brigadier trucks used in severe duty applications or harsh climates, we recommend investing in stainless steel for long-term durability.
Can I install these elbows and pipes myself, or do I need special tools?
Installation is straightforward for those with basic mechanical skills. You'll need a reciprocating saw or pipe cutter to remove old components, and standard hand tools for clamp installation. Most universal elbows use band clamps or U-bolt style connections that don't require welding. However, some installations may benefit from exhaust sealant at connection points. Plan for 2-3 hours of work if replacing multiple sections. Having the truck on jack stands or a lift makes the job much easier.
What degree angles are available, and how do I know which ones I need?
We stock 15, 30, 45, 60, and 90-degree elbows to accommodate various routing needs. To determine the angles you need, either measure your existing elbows before removal or use a cardboard template to mock up your desired exhaust routing. Most GMC Brigadier exhaust systems use a combination of 45 and 90-degree elbows. Remember that multiple smaller angle elbows can often create smoother flow than one sharp 90-degree turn.
Will aftermarket elbows affect my truck's performance or create excessive backpressure?
Quality universal elbows maintain the same internal diameter as your existing exhaust system, so they won't create additional backpressure when properly installed. In fact, replacing corroded or damaged elbows often improves exhaust flow and can restore lost power. Make sure all connections are secure and properly sealed to prevent leaks that could affect performance. Smooth mandrel-bent elbows actually flow better than crush-bent factory pieces, potentially offering slight performance improvements.
