Freightliner FLT Cabover Fuel Tank Steps
Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FLT Cabover Fuel Tank Steps
What years and models of Freightliner FLT cabovers are these fuel tank steps compatible with?
Our fuel tank steps are designed to fit Freightliner FLT cabover models from 1984 through 2000, including the FLT86, FLT106, and FLT120 series. These steps are specifically engineered for the standard fuel tank configurations on these models. If you have a custom tank setup or modified frame rails, please contact our technical support team at 1-888-875-7787 to verify fitment before ordering.
Are these steps made from aluminum or steel, and will they rust over time?
We offer fuel tank steps in both materials. Our aluminum steps are made from 3/16" diamond plate aluminum that won't rust and weighs approximately 40% less than steel alternatives. Our steel options are constructed from 14-gauge steel with a powder-coated finish for corrosion resistance. While the powder coating provides excellent protection, steel steps in harsh winter climates with road salt exposure may require periodic touch-ups after 3-5 years of use.
How difficult is the installation, and what tools will I need?
Installation typically takes 1-2 hours per side for someone with basic mechanical skills. You'll need a drill with metal bits (5/16" and 3/8"), a socket set, wrenches, and a measuring tape. The steps come with detailed instructions and use existing mounting points when possible, though some models require drilling 2-4 new holes. Many customers report the hardest part is reaching the upper mounting bolts on the tank straps - having a helper makes this much easier.
What's the weight capacity of these steps, and will they support a heavy driver?
Our fuel tank steps are rated for 400 pounds of static weight per step. The mounting brackets are reinforced at stress points, and we use Grade 8 hardware throughout. These specifications exceed DOT requirements and have been tested extensively. For drivers over 350 pounds who frequently use the steps, we recommend our heavy-duty bracket kit for additional peace of mind.
Do you offer different styles or finishes to match my truck's appearance?
Yes, we stock multiple options to match your truck's aesthetic. Our aluminum steps come in mill finish (raw aluminum) or polished. Steel steps are available in black powder coat, white powder coat, or bare steel for custom painting. We also offer two tread patterns: standard diamond plate for maximum grip or smooth plate with raised tread bars for easier cleaning. Custom powder coat colors are available with a 2-3 week lead time.
