Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FLT Cabover Fuel Tank Covers & Bras
What year models of Freightliner FLT cabovers do these fuel tank covers fit?
Our fuel tank covers are designed to fit Freightliner FLT cabover models from 1984 through 2000. The most common applications are for the FLT86, FLT106, and FLT112 models. Since tank configurations can vary even within the same model year, we recommend measuring your tank diameter and length before ordering. Standard tank sizes are typically 23" or 25" in diameter with lengths ranging from 48" to 72".
Are these covers made from stainless steel or aluminum, and how thick is the material?
Most of our Freightliner FLT fuel tank covers are manufactured from 16-gauge polished stainless steel, which provides excellent corrosion resistance and durability. Some budget options are available in aluminum, typically 14-gauge, which is lighter but may require more frequent polishing. The stainless steel options maintain their shine longer and resist road salt better, making them ideal for drivers in harsh weather conditions.
Do I need to remove my fuel tanks to install these covers, and what tools are required?
No, you do not need to remove your fuel tanks for installation. These covers are designed as wrap-around units that install directly over your existing tanks while mounted. Basic installation requires a socket set, drill with metal bits for mounting brackets, and approximately 2-3 hours per tank. The covers come with stainless steel straps and mounting hardware. Some drivers prefer adding weather stripping between the tank and cover to prevent rattling.
Will these covers work with aftermarket fuel tank steps and how do they affect fuel capacity gauges?
Our fuel tank covers are designed with cutouts that accommodate most standard fuel tank steps, including popular brands like Minimizer and Jones Performance. The covers include pre-marked areas for custom cutting if needed for non-standard step configurations. Fuel gauge sending units remain fully accessible through designated access panels, so your fuel capacity readings won't be affected. The covers add approximately 1/4" clearance around the tank.
What's the difference between full wrap covers and fuel tank bras for FLT cabovers?
Full wrap covers provide complete 360-degree coverage of your fuel tanks, offering maximum protection and a uniform appearance. They typically cost between $400-$600 per tank. Fuel tank bras cover only the visible front portion of the tank (about 180 degrees), making them easier to install and remove for maintenance. Bras are more budget-friendly at $200-$350 per tank but don't protect the back side from road debris. Both options use the same mounting system and are available in polished or brushed finishes.
