Freightliner FLT Cabover Diesel Fuel Tanks
Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FLT Cabover Diesel Fuel Tanks
What specific Freightliner FLT models and years are these fuel tanks compatible with?
These diesel fuel tanks are designed for Freightliner FLT cabover models from 1978 through 1991, including the FLT 86, FLT 96, and FLT 106 series. Each tank listing specifies whether it fits single or dual tank configurations. Always verify your truck's specific model number and year before ordering, as mounting bracket positions can vary between early and late production years.
What material are these fuel tanks made from, and how thick is the aluminum?
Our Freightliner FLT cabover fuel tanks are constructed from 5052 marine-grade aluminum with a wall thickness of .125 inches (1/8 inch). This aluminum alloy offers excellent corrosion resistance and durability compared to steel tanks, while reducing overall weight by approximately 60%. The tanks feature reinforced baffles inside to minimize fuel slosh and extend tank life.
Do these tanks come with mounting straps and hardware, or do I need to purchase separately?
Fuel tanks are sold without mounting straps, brackets, or hardware unless specifically noted in the product description. Most customers reuse their existing mounting straps if they're in good condition. We do carry replacement strap kits and mounting hardware separately. You'll also need to transfer your existing fuel sending unit, as tanks come with the appropriate opening but not the sending unit itself.
What's the difference between cylindrical and D-shaped tank styles for FLT cabovers?
Cylindrical tanks are the most common style for FLT cabovers and mount using traditional round tank straps. D-shaped tanks have a flat side that sits flush against the frame rail, providing more ground clearance and a cleaner appearance. D-shaped tanks typically require specific mounting brackets. Both styles are available in various capacities from 50 to 150 gallons, with the style often determined by your truck's original configuration.
Are these tanks polished or do they have a brushed finish, and can they be painted?
Our standard fuel tanks come with a mill finish (unpolished aluminum). Polished versions are available for most models at an additional cost and will be clearly marked in the product title. The mill finish tanks can be polished by a local metal shop or painted with proper aluminum primer and paint. Many customers prefer the mill finish as it hides minor scratches better than polished surfaces and requires less maintenance.
