Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FLC112 Frame Steps & Accessories
What years and models are these frame steps compatible with?
Our frame steps are designed specifically for Freightliner FLC112 models from 1988 through 2003. They will fit both day cab and sleeper configurations. However, trucks with custom frame modifications or aftermarket fuel tank configurations may require additional fitting adjustments. We recommend checking your frame rail spacing before ordering, as some specialty vocational models may have non-standard dimensions.
Are these steps made from aluminum or steel, and will they rust?
Most of our FLC112 frame steps are constructed from heavy-duty steel with either a powder-coated or chrome-plated finish for corrosion resistance. Steel steps typically support up to 500 pounds and offer superior durability for commercial use. We also carry aluminum options that are naturally rust-resistant and approximately 40% lighter, making them ideal for weight-conscious applications. All steel models feature drain holes to prevent water accumulation and include a minimum 1-year warranty against rust-through.
How difficult is the installation, and what tools do I need?
Installation typically takes 1-2 hours per side for someone with basic mechanical skills. You'll need a drill with metal bits (typically 3/8" and 1/2"), a socket set, and possibly a grinder for minor frame clearing. Most steps come with universal mounting brackets that attach to existing frame holes when possible, though some drilling is usually required. Professional installation runs $150-300 at most truck shops if you prefer not to do it yourself. Detailed instructions with diagrams are included with each set.
What's the difference between standard and anti-slip step surfaces?
Standard steps feature raised tread patterns or punched holes for traction. Anti-slip models add either a grit-tape surface or welded-on expanded metal grating that provides significantly better grip in wet, muddy, or icy conditions. The anti-slip options are especially recommended for construction, logging, or agricultural applications where drivers frequently enter/exit with muddy or wet boots. The anti-slip coating typically adds $20-40 per step but greatly reduces slip-and-fall risks.
Will aftermarket steps affect my ground clearance or DOT compliance?
Our frame steps are designed to maintain legal ground clearance requirements when properly installed. Most models extend 4-6 inches below the frame rail, which keeps them well above the DOT minimum clearance standards. However, if your truck is already lowered or has air suspension at its lowest setting, measure your current frame-to-ground distance before ordering. All our steps meet FMCSA requirements for commercial vehicle access systems, including proper spacing and weight capacity standards.
