Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner Coronado Radiators
Will these radiators fit my specific Coronado model year?
Our Freightliner Coronado radiators are designed to fit models from 2001 to present, but fitment can vary based on your engine configuration. Most common applications include Caterpillar C15/C16, Cummins ISX, and Detroit DD15/DD16 engines. Before ordering, check your current radiator's part number or provide us with your VIN to ensure proper fitment. Note that 2001-2009 models typically use a different mounting configuration than 2010+ models.
What's the difference between aluminum and plastic tank radiators?
Aluminum tank radiators offer superior durability and heat dissipation compared to plastic tank models. While plastic tanks are more budget-friendly initially, they're prone to cracking at the neck after 3-5 years of use. Aluminum tanks can be repaired if damaged and typically last 8-10 years with proper maintenance. For heavy-haul applications or extreme climates, we strongly recommend aluminum construction despite the higher upfront cost.
Can I install the radiator myself, or do I need a shop?
Installation typically takes 3-4 hours for experienced mechanics. You'll need to drain and refill approximately 12-15 gallons of coolant, disconnect upper and lower hoses, transmission cooler lines (if equipped), and remove the fan shroud. The radiator weighs 60-80 pounds, so having a helper is recommended. Common challenges include aligning mounting brackets and ensuring proper clearance for the CAC pipes. If you're not comfortable working with cooling systems, professional installation runs $300-500 at most shops.
How many rows do I need for my application?
Standard long-haul applications work well with 2-row radiators, while heavy-haul, vocational, or southern climate operations benefit from 3-row or 4-row configurations. If you frequently pull 80,000+ pounds, operate in mountainous terrain, or experience cooling issues with your current setup, upgrade to a higher row count. Keep in mind that 4-row radiators may require fan shroud modifications on some model years.
What warranty coverage should I expect?
Quality aftermarket radiators typically carry a 2-3 year warranty against manufacturing defects. OEM-style units often include lifetime warranties but cost significantly more. The warranty won't cover damage from improper installation, contaminated coolant, or physical impact. To maximize radiator life, flush your cooling system every 2 years, maintain proper coolant mixture (50/50 in most climates), and check for leaks monthly. Most warranty claims stem from failed welds at the tank-to-core junction within the first year.
