Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner Classic Front Fenders & Acc.
Will these fenders fit my specific Freightliner Classic model year?
Our Freightliner Classic front fenders are designed to fit Classic models from 1990 through 2010. The Classic XL and FLD models have the same fender mounting points and dimensions. However, pre-1990 models may have different mounting brackets. We recommend checking your VIN or calling our technical support team at 1-888-875-2425 if you have a Classic built between 1988-1989, as these may require additional mounting hardware.
What's the difference between fiberglass and steel fenders, and which should I choose?
Steel fenders are more durable and resistant to cracking but are heavier (approximately 45-50 lbs per fender) and prone to rust if not properly maintained. Fiberglass fenders are lighter (20-25 lbs per fender), won't rust, and are easier to repair minor damage, but can crack from impacts. Most owner-operators choose fiberglass for weight savings and easier installation, while fleet operations often prefer steel for longevity. Both options use the same mounting hardware and brackets.
Can I install these fenders myself, or do I need professional help?
Installation typically takes 2-3 hours per fender for someone with basic mechanical skills. You'll need standard hand tools, including socket wrenches, drill bits for any new mounting holes, and ideally a helper to hold the fender in position. The most challenging part is aligning the fender with existing mounting points while ensuring proper clearance. Many customers successfully complete the installation themselves, but if you're uncomfortable drilling into your truck or lack the proper tools, professional installation runs $150-300 per fender at most shops.
Do these fenders come primed or painted, and what prep work is needed?
Most aftermarket fenders come with a gray primer coat that requires sanding and painting to match your truck. The primer is designed to be painted over, not as a final finish. You'll need to lightly sand with 320-grit sandpaper, apply a base coat primer if painting a different color than gray, then apply your color and clear coat. Raw steel fenders require immediate priming to prevent rust. Some customers report good results with spray-on bedliner for a durable, textured finish that hides minor imperfections.
Are fender brackets and mounting hardware included, or sold separately?
Fenders are typically sold without mounting brackets or hardware unless specifically noted in the product description. Original brackets can often be reused if they're not damaged or excessively rusted. New bracket kits run $45-85 per side and include all necessary bolts, washers, and rubber isolation mounts. If your original brackets are bent or rusted through, replacing them during fender installation is recommended to ensure proper fit and prevent premature wear on your new fenders.
