Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner Classic Driving Lights
What years and models of Freightliner Classic trucks are these driving lights compatible with?
Our driving lights are designed to fit Freightliner Classic and Classic XL models from 1990 through 2010. This includes both the standard Classic (FLD120) and the Classic XL (FLD132) variants. The mounting brackets and wiring harnesses are specifically engineered for the bumper configurations used during these production years. If you have a custom bumper or aftermarket modifications, please contact our technical support team to verify compatibility before ordering.
How difficult is the installation process, and what tools will I need?
Installation typically takes 2-3 hours for someone with basic mechanical skills. You'll need standard hand tools including socket wrenches (typically 13mm and 15mm), wire strippers, electrical tape or heat shrink tubing, and a drill with metal bits if your bumper doesn't have pre-existing mounting holes. Most installations require routing wires through the bumper and firewall, connecting to your existing headlight circuit or a separate switch. We include detailed instructions with diagrams, and many customers successfully complete the installation in their driveway or shop.
What's the difference between halogen and LED driving light options?
Halogen lights provide a warm, traditional light output at a lower initial cost, typically producing 3,000-4,000 lumens per pair. LED options offer 6,000-8,000 lumens, use 60% less power, last up to 50,000 hours compared to 500-1,000 hours for halogen, and generate less heat. LEDs also feature instant-on capability and better vibration resistance. While LED units cost more upfront, they eliminate bulb replacements and reduce alternator load, making them more economical long-term for high-mileage drivers.
Will these driving lights work with my truck's existing wiring, or do I need additional components?
Most driving light kits include a complete wiring harness with relay, fuse, and switch. However, you'll need to tap into your truck's electrical system - typically the high beam circuit for automatic operation with your headlights, or a constant 12V source if you prefer independent control. Some drivers choose to add an upfitter switch if their truck has available auxiliary switch positions. The lights draw 55-100 watts for halogen or 20-40 watts for LED, which standard Freightliner electrical systems can handle without alternator upgrades.
What finishes are available, and how do they hold up against road salt and weather?
We offer chrome-plated steel, polished stainless steel, and powder-coated black finishes. Chrome provides the classic look but requires regular maintenance in harsh climates to prevent pitting. Stainless steel offers the best corrosion resistance with minimal upkeep, ideal for trucks operating in salt-belt states. Powder-coated black finishes resist chips and corrosion well but may show scratches from road debris over time. All mounting hardware is either stainless steel or zinc-plated for corrosion resistance. For maximum longevity in severe conditions, we recommend stainless steel housings with sealed LED bulbs.
