Frequently Asked Questions About Mack CH/CHN/CHU Truck Deck Plates & Air Line Boxes
What years and models are these deck plates compatible with?
These deck plates and air line boxes are specifically designed for Mack CH, CHN, and CHU models manufactured from 1988 through 2007. They fit all standard configurations including day cabs and sleeper models. However, trucks with aftermarket modifications to the rear frame area may require additional fitment verification. We recommend checking your VIN against our compatibility chart or contacting our support team if your truck has custom frame modifications.
Are these deck plates made from aluminum or steel, and which is better for my application?
We offer both aluminum diamond plate and steel options. Aluminum deck plates typically weigh 40-50% less than steel versions, making them easier to install and reducing overall vehicle weight. They also resist corrosion without painting. Steel deck plates are more affordable and offer superior impact resistance for heavy-duty applications. Most owner-operators prefer aluminum for weight savings, while fleet operators often choose steel for durability and lower replacement costs.
Do I need to drill new holes or modify my frame to install these deck plates?
Most of our deck plates are designed to use existing factory mounting points on CH/CHN/CHU models, requiring no drilling in standard installations. The mounting hardware typically includes grade 8 bolts that attach to pre-existing frame holes. However, some configurations, particularly when adding air line boxes to trucks not originally equipped with them, may require drilling 2-4 additional mounting holes. Installation typically takes 1-2 hours with basic hand tools.
What air line box configurations are available, and will they work with my existing gladhands?
Our air line boxes come in single, dual, and triple compartment configurations. Single boxes accommodate one set of gladhands, dual boxes handle both service and emergency lines with separation, and triple boxes add space for electrical connections. All boxes are designed to work with standard gladhand fittings and include rubber grommets to protect air lines from chafing. The interior dimensions accommodate both straight and 45-degree angled gladhands.
How do these deck plates hold up to road salt and weather conditions?
Aluminum deck plates require minimal maintenance and naturally resist corrosion, though road salt can cause white oxidation over time. A simple wash every few months maintains appearance. Steel deck plates come with a primer coating but should be painted with quality automotive paint for long-term protection. Many customers report 10-15 years of service from properly maintained aluminum plates and 7-10 years from painted steel versions. All mounting hardware is zinc-plated or stainless steel to prevent rust-related failures.
