Frequently Asked Questions About Kenworth W900B/W900L Chrome Stacks & Tops
Will these chrome stacks fit my specific year and model Kenworth W900?
Our chrome stacks are designed to fit Kenworth W900B models (1987-2016) and W900L models (1987-present). However, fitment can vary based on your existing exhaust configuration, especially if you have aftermarket modifications. We recommend measuring your current stack diameter and mounting bracket spacing before ordering. Most of our stacks come in standard 5", 6", and 7" diameters with universal mounting brackets that work with factory exhaust systems.
What's the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel stacks, and which should I choose?
304 stainless steel stacks offer excellent chrome finish and corrosion resistance for most applications at a better price point. 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, providing superior resistance to road salt and coastal environments. If you operate primarily in northern states with heavy road salt use or near ocean areas, we recommend 316 stainless. For most other applications, 304 stainless provides excellent durability and appearance.
How difficult is the installation, and what tools will I need?
Installation typically takes 2-4 hours per stack for someone with basic mechanical skills. You'll need standard hand tools including wrenches, sockets, and potentially a drill for new mounting holes. Most installations require removing the old stack, transferring or installing new mounting brackets, and securing with provided clamps. Some curved or angled stacks may require additional exhaust modifications. We include detailed instructions with each product, and our tech support team can provide guidance if needed.
How do I maintain the chrome finish and prevent discoloration?
Chrome stacks require regular maintenance to prevent bluing and discoloration from exhaust heat. Clean your stacks weekly with a quality chrome polish and microfiber cloth. For heat discoloration, use a specialized chrome restoration product. Apply a heat-resistant wax or sealant monthly to protect the finish. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or steel wool, which can scratch the chrome. Running your engine at proper temperatures and avoiding extended idling also helps prevent excessive heat damage.
What stack styles work best with my truck's configuration?
Straight stacks provide a classic look and are easiest to install on most W900B/L models. Curved stacks offer better smoke dispersal away from the cab but may require exhaust routing modifications. Miter-cut tops provide an aggressive appearance and improved sound, while turn-out tops direct exhaust away from the trailer. Bull hauler stacks work well for livestock trailers. Consider your typical loads, local regulations on stack height, and whether you need heat shields based on your cargo type when selecting your style.
