International Exhaust Parts
Frequently Asked Questions About International Exhaust Parts
Will these exhaust parts fit my specific International truck model and year?
Our International exhaust parts are designed to fit most International truck models from 1990 to present, including ProStar, LoneStar, 9900i, 9200i, and PayStar series. However, compatibility can vary based on your specific engine configuration (Cummins ISX, CAT C15, MaxxForce, etc.) and whether you have a day cab or sleeper. We recommend checking your current exhaust system's measurements and comparing them to our product specifications, or contact our support team with your VIN for exact fitment verification.
What's the difference between aluminized and chrome exhaust stacks, and which should I choose?
Aluminized steel exhaust parts offer excellent corrosion resistance and heat dissipation at a lower price point, typically lasting 3-5 years with proper maintenance. Chrome-plated stacks provide a mirror finish and superior corrosion resistance, often lasting 7-10 years, but require more frequent polishing to maintain their appearance. For trucks in harsh winter climates with heavy road salt exposure, we recommend chrome. For moderate climates or budget-conscious buyers, aluminized steel provides excellent value.
Do I need special tools or professional installation for these exhaust components?
Most straight pipes and mufflers can be installed with basic hand tools including wrenches, a socket set, and exhaust clamps. However, complete exhaust system replacements or modifications involving Y-pipes, flex pipes, or turbo connections typically require cutting tools, a welder, and exhaust hangers. Installation usually takes 2-4 hours for experienced DIYers. We provide detailed installation guides, but recommend professional installation for complex configurations or if you're uncomfortable working under your truck.
How do I know if I need a muffler or can run straight pipes in my area?
Noise regulations vary significantly by state and municipality. While federal DOT regulations don't specify exact decibel limits, many states enforce 80-95 dB limits measured at 50 feet. Straight pipes typically produce 95-105 dB, while our performance mufflers reduce sound to 80-90 dB without significantly restricting flow. Check your local and state regulations before ordering. Our M-Series mufflers offer the best balance of sound reduction and performance for areas with strict noise ordinances.
What size exhaust should I choose - 5 inch or 6 inch diameter?
The correct exhaust diameter depends on your engine size and horsepower. For most stock International engines under 450 HP, a 5-inch system provides optimal performance and fuel efficiency. Engines producing 450-600 HP benefit from 6-inch systems to reduce backpressure. Over-sizing your exhaust can actually decrease low-end torque and fuel economy. Match your new exhaust diameter to your existing turbo outlet size for best results, or upgrade incrementally (no more than 1 inch larger than stock) to maintain proper exhaust velocity.
