Freightliner FLD SBA Headlights
Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FLD SBA Headlights
What years and models of Freightliner FLD are these SBA headlights compatible with?
These SBA (Set Back Axle) headlights are specifically designed for Freightliner FLD models from 1989 to 2002. They fit FLD120, FLD112, and FLD132 Classic models with the set back axle configuration. Before ordering, verify your truck has the SBA front end by checking if your headlights sit lower and further back compared to the standard FLD configuration. The mounting points and wiring harnesses are different between SBA and standard FLD models.
Are these headlights DOT approved and street legal?
Yes, all our Freightliner FLD SBA headlights meet or exceed DOT (Department of Transportation) standards and are fully street legal in all 50 states. Each headlight assembly includes the required DOT marking stamp. We carry both sealed beam and LED options that comply with FMVSS 108 regulations for beam pattern, intensity, and visibility requirements. LED options include proper heat sinks and drivers to maintain consistent light output.
What's the difference between sealed beam and LED options, and which should I choose?
Sealed beam headlights are the traditional halogen style that most FLD trucks came with originally. They're affordable, easy to replace, and provide adequate lighting for most conditions. LED headlights offer 3-5 times more light output, use less power, last 30,000-50,000 hours compared to 500-1,000 hours for sealed beams, and produce a cleaner white light. LEDs cost more upfront but save money long-term through reduced replacements and lower amp draw on your electrical system.
Can I install these headlights myself, or do I need a professional?
Most drivers can install these headlights themselves in 30-60 minutes with basic tools. You'll need a Phillips screwdriver, socket set, and electrical tape. The process involves removing the grille, disconnecting the old headlight plug, removing the retaining ring, installing the new headlight, and reversing the steps. LED upgrades are plug-and-play with the same H4 connector. However, if you're uncomfortable with electrical work or need to aim the headlights properly, professional installation typically costs $50-100.
Why are my new headlights fogging up or getting moisture inside?
Fogging typically occurs due to improper sealing during installation or damaged gaskets. Ensure the rubber gasket between the headlight and bucket is properly seated all around. Check that the bulb is fully inserted and the dust boot (if applicable) creates a tight seal. Small amounts of condensation that clear when the lights warm up are normal. Persistent moisture indicates a faulty seal - contact us for warranty replacement. Always apply dielectric grease to connections to prevent corrosion in wet conditions.
