Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FL70-FL80 Elbows, Piping & Comp.
What years and models are these exhaust elbows compatible with?
Our exhaust elbows and piping components are designed to fit Freightliner FL70 and FL80 models from 1996 through 2007. However, compatibility can vary based on your specific engine configuration (Cat 3126, Cummins ISC, or Mercedes MBE900). We recommend checking your existing exhaust diameter and configuration before ordering, as some models came with 4-inch systems while others use 5-inch. If you're unsure, provide us with your VIN and we can verify the correct fitment.
Are these elbows made from aluminized steel or stainless steel, and which should I choose?
We carry both aluminized steel and stainless steel options. Aluminized steel elbows typically last 3-5 years and offer good corrosion resistance at a lower price point. Stainless steel components cost more upfront but can last 10+ years and maintain their appearance better, especially in harsh weather conditions or coastal areas. For most applications, aluminized steel provides excellent value, but if you're keeping your truck long-term or operate in corrosive environments, stainless steel is worth the investment.
Do I need special tools or clamps for installation?
Installation typically requires basic hand tools including wrenches, a sawzall or exhaust pipe cutter for any modifications, and proper exhaust clamps. We recommend using heavy-duty band clamps rather than U-bolt style clamps for a more secure, leak-free connection. Most installations take 1-2 hours. You'll also need exhaust sealant for the joints. Some tight clearance areas may require removing the exhaust manifold heat shield for easier access.
What's the difference between OEM-style and universal elbows?
OEM-style elbows are pre-formed to exact factory specifications with the correct angles and lengths for direct replacement. Universal elbows require cutting and fitting but offer more flexibility for custom exhaust routing or repairs. OEM-style parts typically install faster and fit better, while universal components are ideal for custom applications or when you need to work around modifications to your truck.
Why are my exhaust elbows failing prematurely?
Common causes of early failure include exhaust leaks causing hot spots, missing or damaged exhaust hangers creating excess stress, and condensation buildup from frequent short trips. Ensure all exhaust hangers are in good condition and properly supporting the system weight. Check for exhaust leaks upstream that can create excessive heat. If your truck sits frequently or makes short trips, moisture can accumulate and accelerate corrosion from the inside out. Regular inspection and addressing these issues promptly will maximize component life.
