Freightliner Classic Air Tanks, Wraps & Mounting
Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner Classic Air Tanks, Wraps & Mounting
What are the exact year ranges and model compatibility for these air tanks?
Our air tanks are designed to fit Freightliner Classic models from 1990 through 2010, including both the FLD and FLC series. The mounting brackets are universal for all Classic models within this range, though some 2008-2010 models may require minor bracket adjustments due to frame variations. Always verify your specific VIN and frame rail measurements before ordering, as some custom configurations may have different spacing requirements.
What material options are available, and how do they hold up against corrosion?
We offer air tanks in three material options: aluminum, steel, and stainless steel. Aluminum tanks provide the best corrosion resistance and weight savings, making them ideal for drivers in salt-belt states. Steel tanks come with a powder-coated finish that resists rust for 3-5 years under normal conditions. Stainless steel options offer premium durability and appearance but come at a higher price point. All tanks meet DOT specifications and include proper drain valves to prevent moisture buildup.
How difficult is the installation, and what tools are required?
Installation typically takes 2-4 hours for someone with basic mechanical skills. You'll need standard hand tools including 3/4" and 7/8" wrenches, a torque wrench capable of 85-100 ft-lbs, and potentially a drill with metal bits if your frame lacks pre-existing mounting holes. The most challenging aspect is properly routing air lines and ensuring all connections are leak-free. We recommend having thread sealant, new air line fittings, and a helper to position the tanks during mounting.
Do the decorative wraps affect air tank performance or void warranties?
Our tank wraps are purely cosmetic and do not impact air tank performance, capacity, or heat dissipation. The wraps are made from marine-grade vinyl or polished stainless steel bands that allow proper airflow around the tank. They will not void your tank warranty as long as installation doesn't involve drilling into the tank itself. Wraps can actually help protect the tank surface from road debris and make cleaning easier.
What's included in the mounting kit, and are there different bracket styles?
Complete mounting kits include heavy-duty steel brackets (available in chrome or black powder coat), grade 8 mounting bolts, lock washers, and rubber isolation pads to reduce vibration. We offer three bracket styles: standard strap-style for round tanks, cradle-style for better weight distribution, and step-mounted brackets that integrate with existing cab steps. Each kit includes detailed instructions with torque specifications. Note that air lines, fittings, and drain valves are sold separately unless you purchase a complete tank assembly.
