Semi Truck DPF Box Covers: Types, Fitment & Replacement

What Is a DPF Box Cover on a Semi Truck?

Get a polished, custom look while protecting your DPF unit from road debris. Most DPF covers come in standard 304 stainless steel finishes and can act as a replacement for your front panel DPF box or as a slipcover.

DPF box covers are exterior panels designed to conceal or protect the aftertreatment housing. They do not replace the diesel particulate filter inside the system.

Types of DPF Covers

DPF Slipcovers vs. Replacement Box Covers

A slipcover basically “slips onto” the existing DPF unit.

  • DPF slipcovers: Fit over the existing box or panel to change its appearance.
  • Replacement box covers: Replace an existing exterior panel rather than fitting over it.

Before ordering, check whether the product is a complete replacement panel or a cover designed to fit over your existing DPF box.

Stainless Steel vs. Chrome DPF Covers

Most DPF covers come in standard 304 stainless steel finishes, while some come as chrome aluminum.

Stainless steel is the premium, corrosion-resistant option made for durability. On aluminum options, the chrome finishes are great for a glossy shine, but need regular washing so that the surface doesn't peel off.

How to Choose the Right DPF Cover

The right DPF cover depends on your truck model, exhaust configuration, mounting locations, and existing box dimensions.

Check Truck Model and Year

Start by identifying your semi truck's make, model, and year.

Some DPF covers are built for specific truck models. Others require additional measurements or mounting hardware.

Check Exhaust Configuration and Mounting Points

The slipcover depends on your semi truck model.

Check whether your truck has vertical exhaust stacks or a horizontal exhaust outlet, sometimes called a grass burner.

Before ordering, inspect:

  • Driver-side and passenger-side DPF box locations.
  • Existing mounting brackets and hardware.
  • Exhaust pipe routing and clearance.
  • Differences between the DPF box and battery box.

Measure the Existing DPF Box

Measure width, height, and bolt-hole spacing (center to center) before choosing a new DPF box cover.

Peterbilt 589 DPF Covers

Peterbilt 589: on a grass burner (exhaust comes out underneath) the same cover will fit both sides, driver and passenger side. If exhaust comes out of both sides, it’s a normal DPF. The battery box cover WILL NOT fit a DPF unit.

How to Install or Replace a DPF Box Cover

  1. Remove the passenger DPF cover by unscrewing the bolts from the steps.
  2. Remove the OEM bracket from the DPF frame.
  3. Remove the bottom step brackets from the DPF cover. Install the new bottom brackets using the provided 1/4-20 x 0.75" carriage bolts.
  4. Before placing the DPF cover back on, install the conversion panel (PNL10655000PN) on the DPF frame using the provided 3/8-16 nuts.
  5. Place the nylon spacers in their located positions.
  6. Gently place the DPF cover over the frame and secure it using the provided 3/8-16 x 1.00" hex bolts.
  7. Attach the bottom step using the truck's existing bolts.
