Chrome vs Stainless Steel Exhaust Stacks
Wondering whether to purchase a chrome exhaust stack kit or a stainless steel one?
Here's a breakdown of the differences.
Buying Chrome vs Stainless Exhaust Stacks
Chrome Steel
- Deeper mirror appearance
- Highly reflective
- Traditional custom-truck finish
- Plating condition determines appearance
Stainless Steel
- Bright reflective finish
- Slightly different tone
- Surface scratches are part of the metal rather than damage to a separate plating layer
- Repolishing restores much of the finish
Chromed-Plated Stainless
- Mirror-like appearance without conventional decorative chrome plating
- Premium material option
Premium Options: Grand Rock or Lincoln Chrome
Affordable Options: TPHD or BESTfit
Exhaust Gas Heat Resistance Comparison
A semi truck’s exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs) can reach 392°F to 1,293°F.
Stainless steel has the highest heat-resistance (1600°F to 2102°F). Chrome, by itself, can withstand 800°F to 1,300°F.
Exhaust Material Finish Comparison
| Material | Appearance | Durability & Maintenance | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome-Plated Steel | Deep, mirror-like show-truck shine | Requires regular cleaning. Moisture or damaged plating can allow the steel underneath to rust, pit, or flake. | Visible stacks when shine and lower upfront cost are priorities |
| Polished 304 Stainless | Bright polished finish, though different from chrome | Naturally corrosion-resistant throughout the metal and requires less upkeep than chrome-plated steel. | Visible stacks, clamps, and flex pipe |
| 409 / 439 Stainless | More functional than decorative; may discolor with heat | Built for high-temperature service. 409 may develop light surface rust while remaining structurally strong. | High-heat exhaust sections and less-visible components |
| Chrome-Plated Stainless | Show-quality chrome finish | Combines a chrome exterior with a corrosion-resistant stainless steel base for longer-term durability. | Premium visible stacks and show-truck builds |
| Aluminized Steel | Dull, functional finish | Aluminum coating improves heat and corrosion resistance while keeping cost lower. | Mufflers and hidden connecting pipes |
| Galvanized Steel | Dull zinc-coated finish | Zinc helps resist corrosion, but the coating is less suited to extreme exhaust temperatures. | Cooler flex-tube applications |
| Bare Mild Steel | Unfinished industrial appearance | Low cost and easy to form, but rusts quickly unless painted, coated, or plated. | Internal hardware and mounting brackets |
Why Exhaust Stacks Rust From Within
Although stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, no material is 100% corrosion-proof. Over time, rust can still accumulate from inside of the stack.
Rain water can move into the exhaust system when it's idle.
Normally, the high exhaust temperatures burn off any moisture. But if the truck is left idle, water can settle into the pipe bends and connector sections oxidizing the material and rusting it from the inside out.
On chrome stacks, the damage isn't obvious until you poke a hole through the mirror-polished exterior. This is because the exterior contains an alloy coating to make it shine bright.
This is partly why exhaust accessories like rain caps and premium-tier chrome-steel exhaust stacks are sold so frequently.
It's a simple solution to an otherwise expensive problem.
