Peterbilt 389 Glider Cab & Related

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 389 Glider Cab & Related

What exactly is a Peterbilt 389 glider cab?

A glider cab is a new, unpowered cab and chassis assembly built without an engine, transmission, or rear axle already installed. It's designed for builders who want to pair a fresh Peterbilt 389 cab with a rebuilt or existing drivetrain, allowing you to construct a complete truck around components you already own or source separately.

Does the glider cab come with wiring, interior, and other components already installed?

Coverage varies by listing. Some glider cabs arrive with wiring harnesses, gauges, interior trim, and sleeper components already in place, while others are more of a bare shell. Check the specific product listing or contact our sales team before ordering so you know exactly what's included and what you'll need to source separately.

Will a glider cab from this category fit my existing drivetrain and chassis?

Glider cabs are built to Peterbilt 389 specifications, but fitment with your specific engine, transmission, and frame rails depends on your setup. Because glider builds often mix components from different years and manufacturers, we recommend confirming mounting points, wiring compatibility, and dimensions against your drivetrain before purchase. Our team can help answer specific fitment questions if you provide your build details.

What's involved in installing a glider cab, and can I do it myself?

Installing a glider cab is a major undertaking that typically involves mounting the cab to your chassis, integrating your engine and transmission, connecting wiring and controls, and finishing out the interior and exterior components. This work is usually done by experienced truck builders or shops with the tools and knowledge to handle a full build. If you're not experienced with heavy-duty truck assembly, we recommend working with a qualified shop.

Are glider kit trucks legal to operate, and are there regulations I should know about?

Regulations around glider kits have changed over the years and can vary by state and by how the finished vehicle is titled and registered. Rules may also depend on the age and emissions certification of the drivetrain you install. We encourage you to check current federal and state regulations, as well as titling requirements in your area, before starting a glider build to make sure the finished truck can be legally registered and operated.
