Kenworth W900B/W900L Winter Fronts & Bug Screens

Frequently Asked Questions About Kenworth W900B/W900L Winter Fronts & Bug Screens

What is the difference between a winter front and a bug screen?

A winter front is a heavier cover, typically made of vinyl, canvas, or a similar durable material, that mounts over the grille to block cold air from reaching the radiator and engine compartment during cold weather driving. A bug screen is a lighter mesh or perforated panel designed to keep insects, debris, and road grime out of the grille while still allowing airflow year-round. Many owners use a bug screen in warmer months and switch to a winter front once temperatures drop.

Will a winter front or bug screen fit my specific W900B or W900L without modification?

Winter fronts and bug screens for the W900B and W900L are built to match the factory grille shape and mounting points for those specific models, so they should install without cutting or drilling in most cases. Because Kenworth updated grille designs across production years, it is important to confirm your truck's exact model year and grille style before ordering to make sure the fit is correct.

How do I attach and remove a winter front or bug screen?

Most winter fronts and bug screens use a combination of snaps, straps, grommets, or clips that correspond to existing mounting points on the grille or hood, so no permanent hardware is usually required. This also makes them easy to remove for cleaning, storage during warmer months, or swapping between a winter front and a bug screen as the season changes.

Can using a winter front cause my engine to overheat?

A winter front is designed to be used in cold weather when airflow needs are lower, but it can restrict cooling too much if left on during warmer temperatures or extended highway hauls with a heavy load. Drivers typically watch their coolant temperature gauge closely after installing one and unzip, unroll, or partially remove the front if temperatures climb, especially during the transition between seasons.

What material options are available, and how do I know which one will hold up best?

Winter fronts are commonly available in vinyl or canvas material, while bug screens are typically made from mesh or perforated metal or plastic. Vinyl and mesh options tend to resist moisture and are easier to wipe clean, while canvas offers a heavier-duty feel for drivers facing harsher winter conditions. Choosing the right material often comes down to your typical driving climate and how much handling the part will see over a season.
