Dodge SUV Fuel Tanks

Frequently Asked Questions About Dodge SUV Fuel Tanks

What materials are Dodge SUV fuel tanks made from, and how does that affect durability?

Replacement fuel tanks for Dodge SUVs are typically made from either steel or high-density polyethylene (plastic). Steel tanks offer strength but can be more prone to rust over time, especially in areas with road salt exposure, while plastic tanks resist corrosion and are often lighter in weight. Both options are built to meet OEM specifications for fit and fuel capacity, so the right choice often comes down to your climate, budget, and personal preference.

How do I know if a fuel tank will fit my specific Dodge SUV model and year?

Fuel tank shape, capacity, and mounting points can vary between Dodge SUV models and even between years and trim levels of the same model. Always check the listed year, make, model, and engine compatibility before purchasing, and compare mounting hole locations and filler neck placement with your existing tank. If you are unsure, providing your VIN or contacting our support team can help confirm the correct match.

Will my existing fuel pump, sending unit, and hardware transfer to a new tank?

In most cases, your fuel pump module, sending unit, straps, and hardware can be transferred from your old tank to the replacement, provided they are in good working condition. It is a good practice to inspect these components for wear, corrosion, or damage during the swap, since replacing a worn sending unit or pump at the same time can save you from needing to access the tank again soon after installation.

What does installing a replacement fuel tank typically involve?

Installation generally requires safely draining the remaining fuel, disconnecting the fuel lines and electrical connections, removing the retaining straps or skid plate, and lowering the old tank for removal. The new tank is then positioned, secured with straps or hardware, and reconnected. Because this job involves working around fuel, it should be done with the vehicle properly supported, in a well-ventilated area, and with attention to any local fire safety precautions. Many customers with moderate mechanical experience handle this themselves, though a professional installation is a reasonable option if you are not comfortable working with fuel systems.

How can I tell if my current tank needs to be replaced rather than repaired?

Signs that point to replacement rather than repair include visible rust-through, persistent fuel odor, dents that have compromised the tank's structure, or a fuel gauge that behaves erratically due to a damaged sending unit mount. While small punctures are sometimes patched as a temporary fix, fuel tanks are a critical safety component, so a full replacement is usually the more reliable long-term solution once significant corrosion or structural damage is present.
