Peterbilt 359 Fuel Tank Covers & Bras

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 359 Fuel Tank Covers & Bras

Will these fuel tank covers fit my specific year Peterbilt 359?

Our fuel tank covers are designed to fit Peterbilt 359 models from 1967 to 1987. However, tank sizes can vary based on your truck's configuration. Most covers fit standard 100-150 gallon round tanks with diameters between 23-26 inches. We recommend measuring your tank diameter and length before ordering. If you have aftermarket or custom tanks, contact our support team with your measurements for compatibility verification.

What's the difference between vinyl and stainless steel fuel tank covers?

vinyl covers are lightweight, cost-effective, and provide good protection against minor scratches and UV damage. They typically last 3-5 years with proper care and are easier to install. Stainless steel covers offer superior durability, lasting 10+ years, and provide better protection against road debris and corrosion. Stainless options require more precise fitment but offer a premium appearance. Consider vinyl for budget-conscious protection or stainless for long-term investment and enhanced aesthetics.

How difficult is the installation, and what tools do I need?

Installation difficulty varies by type. vinyl bras typically take 30-45 minutes and require no special tools - they use adjustable straps or elastic bands. Stainless steel covers take 1-2 hours and may require basic hand tools like wrenches and screwdrivers for bracket mounting. Some drivers report needing to slightly modify mounting brackets for perfect fitment on older models. Most installations can be completed without professional help.

Do fuel tank covers restrict access to fuel caps and sight gauges?

Quality fuel tank covers are designed with accessibility in mind. Most feature cutouts or removable panels for fuel caps, sight gauges, and drain valves. vinyl bras often have zippered or velcro access panels, while stainless covers incorporate precisely positioned cutouts. Before purchasing, verify that the cover design accommodates your specific tank configuration, especially if you have auxiliary equipment or custom fuel cap locations.

How do I maintain fuel tank covers to prevent rust and wear?

For vinyl covers, clean monthly with mild soap and water, avoiding harsh chemicals that can crack the material. Apply vinyl protectant every 3-4 months to prevent UV damage. Stainless steel covers require regular cleaning with stainless steel cleaner to prevent water spots and maintain shine. Check mounting hardware quarterly for looseness or corrosion, especially in winter climates where road salt is used. Proper maintenance can double the lifespan of your fuel tank covers.
