International HX Bumpers

Frequently Asked Questions About International HX Bumpers

What materials are International HX bumpers made from, and how thick is the steel?

Most aftermarket International HX bumpers are constructed from heavy-duty steel, typically ranging from 10-gauge to 14-gauge thickness depending on the manufacturer and model. Premium options feature 304 stainless steel for superior corrosion resistance, while standard models use powder-coated mild steel. The powder coating process includes a zinc primer base for added rust protection. Always verify the specific gauge and material type with the manufacturer, as these specifications directly impact durability and weight capacity.

Will these bumpers fit my specific International HX model year, and what about the HX520 versus HX620?

International HX bumpers are generally compatible with model years 2017 through current production, but fitment can vary between the HX520 and HX620 due to different frame rail widths and mounting configurations. The HX620 typically has wider frame spacing that may require different mounting brackets. Before ordering, measure your frame rail width (center to center) and verify whether your truck has the standard 34-inch or wide 36-inch frame rails. Some bumpers are universal with adjustable mounting brackets, while others are model-specific.

How difficult is the installation process, and what tools or modifications are required?

Installation typically takes 3-5 hours with basic shop tools including a socket set, torque wrench, and drill. Most bumpers use existing frame mounting points, but some models require drilling 2-4 additional holes per side for secure attachment. You'll need at least two people for safe handling as these bumpers often weigh between 150-300 pounds. Common challenges include aligning fog light wiring harnesses and ensuring proper clearance for tow hooks. Professional installation runs $300-500 if you prefer to avoid the heavy lifting.

What finish options are available, and how do they hold up against road salt and weather?

The three main finish options are chrome-plated steel, polished stainless steel, and powder-coated steel (available in black, white, or custom colors). Chrome requires regular polishing and can show pitting in harsh climates after 2-3 years. Powder-coated finishes offer the best protection against road salt when properly maintained, lasting 5-7 years before requiring touch-ups. Stainless steel provides the best long-term durability but costs 40-60% more than painted options. For maximum protection in salt-belt states, choose powder-coated or stainless steel options.

Can I add accessories like light bars or tow hooks to these bumpers, and what weight capacity do they support?

Most International HX aftermarket bumpers come pre-drilled for standard accessories including fog lights, LED light bars (up to 50 inches), and tow hook receivers. Weight capacities vary significantly - basic bumpers support 10,000-15,000 pound straight-line pulls, while heavy-duty models with reinforced tow hook mounts can handle up to 30,000 pounds. Always check the specific bumper's rated capacity before use. Additional mounting tabs for air horns, license plate brackets, and step plates are typically included, but verify these features match your specific accessory requirements before purchasing.
