International 4700-4900 Bumpers

Frequently Asked Questions About International 4700-4900 Bumpers

What years and models do these bumpers fit, and are they interchangeable between 4700 and 4900 series?

Most aftermarket bumpers for International 4700 and 4900 trucks fit models from 1989 to 2017. While the 4700 and 4900 share the same basic frame rail width and mounting patterns, always verify the specific year range listed for each bumper. Some bumpers are universal between both series, but others may have slight variations in mounting brackets or width. Check the product specifications carefully, especially for trucks with DT466 engines versus other powerplants, as this can affect fitment.

What's the difference between chrome steel and stainless steel bumpers, and which holds up better?

Chrome-plated steel bumpers offer a mirror-like finish at a lower price point but require regular polishing and can rust if the chrome chips or wears through. Stainless steel bumpers (typically 304-grade) cost more upfront but resist corrosion naturally and maintain their appearance with minimal maintenance. For trucks operating in salt-belt states or coastal areas, stainless steel provides significantly better long-term durability. Chrome works well for show trucks or vehicles in dry climates with proper care.

Can I install these bumpers myself, and what tools or modifications are required?

Installation typically takes 2-4 hours with basic hand tools including socket sets, wrenches, and a drill. Most bumpers bolt directly to existing frame rail holes, though some may require drilling additional mounting holes. You'll need at least one helper due to weight (bumpers range from 75-150 pounds). Common challenges include aligning fog light wiring, relocating license plate brackets, and ensuring proper clearance for tow hooks. Professional installation runs $200-400 if you prefer not to DIY.

Are these bumpers compatible with factory fog lights and tow hooks?

Most replacement bumpers include cutouts for factory fog lights, but you may need to purchase separate mounting brackets or bezels. Tow hook compatibility varies by bumper style - some have integrated tow hook slots while others require separate bolt-on tow hooks or may not accommodate them at all. Set-back axle bumpers typically have the most flexibility for accessories. Always verify these features in the product description if fog lights or tow hooks are must-haves for your application.

What's the actual weight capacity for tow hooks on these aftermarket bumpers?

Aftermarket bumper tow hook ratings typically range from 10,000 to 30,000 pounds depending on the bumper construction and mounting system. However, the actual safe towing capacity depends on proper frame attachment, not just the bumper rating. Heavy-duty 3/8-inch steel bumpers with reinforced mounting brackets offer the highest ratings. For commercial towing or recovery operations, verify that the bumper meets DOT requirements and always use proper safety chains and recovery techniques.
