Freightliner FLC120 Winter Fronts & Bug Screens

Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FLC120 Winter Fronts & Bug Screens

What is the difference between a winter front and a bug screen?

A winter front is a cover that mounts over the grille to block cold air from reaching the radiator, helping the engine reach and maintain proper operating temperature in cold weather. A bug screen is a mesh covering designed to keep insects, debris, and road grime out of the grille and radiator core during warmer months. Some products combine both functions, while others are designed for one purpose only, so check the product description before ordering.

Will this fit my Freightliner FLC120 without modification?

Products in this category are designed to match the FLC120 grille and hood configuration, but small variations in model year or prior body modifications can affect fit. We recommend confirming your truck's year and grille style against the listed specifications before purchasing, and checking whether the part uses factory mounting points or requires additional hardware.

How does a winter front affect engine temperature and fuel economy?

By restricting airflow to the radiator, a winter front helps the engine warm up faster and maintain a more consistent operating temperature in cold conditions, which can improve cab heat output and reduce strain on the cooling system. Some drivers also report a modest fuel economy benefit in cold weather since the engine isn't working as hard to stay warm. Winter fronts should be removed or opened up once temperatures rise to avoid overheating.

What material are these winter fronts and bug screens made from, and how durable are they?

Most winter fronts and bug screens are made from durable materials such as heavy vinyl, canvas, or coated mesh, often reinforced at stress points and grommets to withstand repeated use, wind exposure, and temperature swings. Quality varies by manufacturer, so look for reinforced edges and corrosion-resistant hardware if you plan to use the product for multiple seasons.

How do I install and remove a winter front or bug screen, and can it be used year-round?

Installation typically involves securing the cover over the grille using existing mounting points, straps, snaps, or magnets, depending on the specific product design. Most winter fronts are intended for cold-weather use only and should be removed or rolled up during warmer months to prevent engine overheating, while bug screens are generally safe to leave on year-round since they allow more airflow. Always monitor engine temperature after installation to make sure airflow is sufficient for your operating conditions.
