Volvo WIA Bumpers

Frequently Asked Questions About Volvo WIA Bumpers

What years and models of Volvo WIA trucks are these bumpers compatible with?

Our Volvo WIA bumpers are designed to fit Volvo WIA models from 1988 through 2003. The WIA series includes both the standard WIA and WIA64T models. Most aftermarket bumpers will fit both configurations, but always verify the specific mounting hole patterns for your truck's year. Pre-1995 models may have slightly different mounting brackets, so we recommend calling our support team at 1-888-875-7787 if you have a 1988-1994 WIA to confirm exact fitment.

What's the difference between chrome steel and stainless steel bumpers for my WIA?

Chrome-plated steel bumpers offer a mirror-like finish at a lower price point but require regular polishing and maintenance to prevent rust, especially in salt-heavy regions. Stainless steel bumpers (typically 304-grade) cost more upfront but resist corrosion naturally and maintain their appearance with minimal care. For trucks operating in coastal areas or northern states with heavy road salt use, stainless steel provides better long-term value. Chrome bumpers work well for show trucks or southern climate operations where corrosion is less of a concern.

Can I install a Volvo WIA bumper myself, and what tools do I need?

Yes, most experienced truck owners can install a WIA bumper in 2-3 hours with basic tools. You'll need: a socket set (typically 3/4" and 7/8"), a torque wrench, penetrating oil for rusty bolts, and ideally a helper since bumpers can weigh 40-80 pounds. The main challenges are removing corroded original bolts and properly aligning the new bumper. Factory mounting brackets usually transfer to the new bumper. Always torque mounting bolts to 75-85 ft-lbs unless otherwise specified by the manufacturer.

Which bumper styles fit the Volvo WIA, and do they affect ground clearance?

The WIA accepts several bumper styles: Texas-style (squared ends), Boxed-end (fully enclosed ends), and Rolled-end (rounded corners). All maintain factory ground clearance when properly installed. Texas-style bumpers extend slightly wider than stock, which some drivers prefer for additional protection. Boxed-end styles offer the most robust construction for vocational trucks. The mounting height remains consistent across styles, sitting approximately 22-24 inches from ground level on a standard WIA setup.

How much weight do aftermarket bumpers add compared to factory WIA bumpers?

Factory Volvo WIA bumpers typically weigh 35-45 pounds. Aftermarket chrome steel replacements range from 40-55 pounds, while heavy-duty stainless options can reach 60-80 pounds. The additional weight is negligible for overall truck performance but provides increased durability. If weight is a critical concern for your application, specify this when ordering, as some manufacturers offer lighter gauge options that still exceed OEM strength specifications while adding only 5-10 pounds over stock.
