7-5 Inch Exhaust Stacks

Frequently Asked Questions About 7-5 Inch Exhaust Stacks

What are 7.5 inch exhaust stacks used for on a semi-truck?

Exhaust stacks are the vertical pipes that route exhaust gases from the engine and muffler up and away from the cab, typically mounted behind the cab or along the frame rail. The 7.5 inch measurement refers to the outer diameter of the stack, which is a common size used to match specific muffler outlets, elbows, and other exhaust components already installed on many heavy-duty trucks.

How do I know if a 7.5 inch stack will fit my truck's exhaust system?

Fitment depends on matching the stack's inside diameter to the outside diameter of the pipe or muffler outlet it will connect to, so it's important to measure your existing exhaust components before ordering. If you're replacing a stack, matching the original diameter, length, and mounting style will help ensure a proper connection without needing extra adapters or clamps.

What materials and finishes are these exhaust stacks available in?

Exhaust stacks are commonly available in aluminized steel, stainless steel, and chrome-plated finishes. Aluminized steel offers good heat and corrosion resistance at a lower cost, stainless steel provides longer-lasting durability and better resistance to rust, and chrome finishes add a polished, chrome look for trucks focused on appearance. The right choice often comes down to budget, desired look, and how much exposure to road salt or harsh weather the truck sees.

Do exhaust stacks affect emissions compliance or need to meet any regulations?

Exhaust stacks themselves are generally not emissions components, since they don't alter aftertreatment systems like DPF or SCR, but stack height, placement, and any modifications to the exhaust path can be subject to state and local regulations regarding noise, visibility, or overall vehicle height. It's a good idea to check your local and DOT regulations before making changes to stack length or routing.

Can I install a 7.5 inch exhaust stack myself, or do I need a professional?

Many drivers and owner-operators install exhaust stacks themselves using basic tools, especially when replacing a stack with the same diameter and mounting style. The process typically involves loosening clamps, removing the old stack, and securing the new one in place, but working at height on a truck and handling heavy stack sections means care should be taken, and a professional installation is recommended if you're unfamiliar with exhaust work or need custom cutting and fitting.
