6 Inch Exhaust Stacks

Frequently Asked Questions About 6 Inch Exhaust Stacks

What materials are 6 inch exhaust stacks made from, and which one should I choose?

6 inch exhaust stacks are typically made from aluminized steel, stainless steel, or chrome-plated steel. Aluminized steel offers good heat resistance at a lower cost but can dull over time. Stainless steel resists rust and holds up well in various weather conditions. Chrome-plated stacks provide the shiniest, most polished look but require more regular cleaning to prevent water spotting and staining. Your choice often comes down to budget, desired appearance, and how much maintenance you're willing to do.

Will a 6 inch exhaust stack fit my truck, or do I need to check compatibility first?

Exhaust stacks are generally sold by diameter and length rather than by specific make and model, so a 6 inch stack will fit any application designed for that pipe diameter. That said, you'll want to confirm the diameter of your existing exhaust piping or elbow, check the stack length against your cab height and mounting setup, and verify whether you need a straight, curved, or flared end to match your current configuration.

Do I need any special tools or expertise to install a new exhaust stack?

Most exhaust stacks slide over or into the existing exhaust pipe or elbow and are secured with clamps, making installation straightforward for anyone comfortable with basic hand tools. You'll typically need a wrench or socket set to tighten the clamps and possibly a ladder to safely reach the stack mounting point. If your stack requires cutting to length or welding, that job is better left to a shop with the right equipment.

Are there regulations on exhaust stack height or placement I should know about?

Yes, many states and the FMCSA have regulations regarding exhaust outlet height, direction, and placement relative to the cab and fuel tanks to prevent exhaust from entering the cab or creating a fire hazard. Requirements can vary by state, so it's a good idea to check your local DOT regulations before finalizing stack height or installation position, especially if you're modifying your setup significantly from stock.

How do I keep my exhaust stack looking good and prevent rust or discoloration?

Regular washing with a mild soap and water solution helps remove road grime, diesel soot, and moisture before they cause staining. For chrome stacks, a dedicated chrome cleaner and polish will help maintain shine and prevent pitting. Stainless steel stacks benefit from occasional polishing to remove surface discoloration caused by heat cycling. Wiping down the stack after wet weather or heavy driving conditions can go a long way toward keeping it looking new.
