Peterbilt 587 Hoods & Related

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 587 Hoods & Related

Will this hood fit my Peterbilt 587 exactly, or do I need to check the year and configuration?

Hoods and related components are molded specifically for the Peterbilt 587 model, but fitment can still vary based on production year, headlight style, and whether your truck has factory options like specific fender or grille configurations. Always confirm your truck's VIN and year with our sales team before ordering to ensure the hood, panel, or bracket you select matches your specific setup.

What material are these hoods made from, and how does it compare to the factory original?

Most replacement and aftermarket hoods for the Peterbilt 587 are constructed from fiberglass or SMC (sheet molding compound), similar to the materials used by the factory. Fiberglass hoods tend to offer a more affordable option and can be repaired if damaged, while SMC hoods generally provide added durability and resistance to cracking or flexing over time. The product description for each listing will specify the exact material used.

Do these hoods come pre-painted, primed, or unfinished?

This varies by product and manufacturer. Some hoods arrive gel-coated or primed and ready for paint, while others may require additional prep work before finishing. Check the individual product listing for details on finish, and plan for professional paint matching if you want the new hood to blend seamlessly with your existing paint job.

What is involved in installing a replacement hood or hood component?

Installation typically involves removing the damaged hood or panel, transferring or replacing hardware such as hinges, latches, and brackets, and mounting the new piece using the factory mounting points. Depending on the specific part, you may also need to reinstall grille inserts, headlight housings, or emblems. We recommend having a qualified technician handle installation, especially for full hood replacements, to ensure proper alignment and a secure fit.

Are these hoods and related parts DOT compliant and safe for road use?

Reputable aftermarket and OEM-style hoods are designed to meet applicable safety and structural standards for on-road use, including proper mounting integrity and clearance for lights and mirrors required by DOT regulations. That said, always verify that any part you install maintains required lighting, reflector, and visibility standards for your state and application before returning your truck to service.
