Peterbilt 587 Fuel Tank Brackets & Straps

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 587 Fuel Tank Brackets & Straps

Will these brackets and straps fit my Peterbilt 587's fuel tank size?

Fuel tank brackets and straps are typically designed to match specific tank diameters and mounting configurations. Before ordering, confirm the diameter of your fuel tank and check the listed specifications on each product page, as brackets and straps for a 23-inch tank will not fit a 26-inch tank, and mounting hole spacing can vary depending on the model year and tank manufacturer.

What material are the brackets and straps made from, and will they hold up in harsh conditions?

Most fuel tank brackets are made from steel and are either painted, powder-coated, or galvanized to resist rust and corrosion. Straps are commonly steel as well, sometimes with a protective coating. Given constant exposure to road salt, moisture, and debris, choosing a coated or galvanized option can help extend the life of the part, especially in regions with harsh winters.

Do I need any special tools to install new fuel tank brackets or straps?

Installation generally requires basic hand tools such as wrenches, sockets, and possibly a torque wrench to ensure fasteners are secured to the proper specification. Because the fuel tank must be supported and properly aligned during removal and reinstallation, having a second set of hands or a jack to support the tank's weight is strongly recommended.

How do I know if my current brackets or straps need to be replaced?

Common signs include visible rust or corrosion, cracks or bends in the bracket, a fuel tank that shifts or sits unevenly, or straps that have stretched, frayed, or show weld failure. If you notice unusual noise or movement from the fuel tank while driving, it is a good idea to inspect the brackets and straps for wear or damage.

Are these brackets and straps sold individually or as a complete kit?

This varies by product, so check each listing carefully. Some parts are sold as a single bracket or strap, while others come as a full mounting kit with all necessary hardware included. If you are replacing an entire mounting system, verify whether hardware such as bolts, nuts, and spacers is included or needs to be purchased separately.
