Peterbilt 362 Fuel Tank Brackets & Straps

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 362 Fuel Tank Brackets & Straps

What do fuel tank brackets and straps actually do?

Fuel tank brackets and straps are the mounting hardware that secure your fuel tank to the truck frame. Brackets typically bolt to the frame rail and support the tank cradle, while straps wrap around the tank body to hold it firmly in place and prevent shifting, vibration damage, or fatigue cracking over time.

How do I know these brackets and straps will fit my Peterbilt 362?

Fit depends on your truck's specific fuel tank size, shape, and frame configuration, since Peterbilt 362s were built with different tank capacities and mounting setups over the years. Always check the tank diameter, frame rail spacing, and mounting hole pattern against the product listing specs before ordering, and compare against your original hardware if you're replacing worn parts.

What material and finish options are available?

Brackets and straps are commonly available in steel and aluminum, with finishes such as plain, galvanized, or powder-coated steel, or bare and polished aluminum. Steel options tend to offer strength and affordability, while aluminum and coated finishes provide better corrosion resistance, which matters if your truck sees a lot of road salt, moisture, or harsh weather exposure.

How do I tell if my current brackets or straps need to be replaced?

Common warning signs include visible rust or corrosion, cracked or bent brackets, stretched or frayed straps, a fuel tank that shifts or rattles while driving, or unusual wear marks where the strap contacts the tank. If you notice any of these issues, it's best to replace the hardware promptly to avoid tank damage or a fuel leak.

Can I install fuel tank brackets and straps myself, or do I need a professional?

Many truck owners with basic mechanical experience and the right tools can replace brackets and straps themselves, since the job generally involves supporting the tank, removing the old hardware, and bolting in the new components. That said, because the fuel tank is heavy and needs proper support during removal and installation, some drivers prefer having a shop handle it to ensure everything is torqued correctly and the tank is properly secured before returning to the road.
