International IH Cabover Fuel Tank Bracket-Strap

Frequently Asked Questions About International IH Cabover Fuel Tank Bracket-Strap

What is the purpose of a fuel tank bracket-strap on my International IH cabover?

The bracket-strap is the mounting hardware that secures the fuel tank to the truck's frame rail. It holds the tank firmly in place, preventing shifting, vibration damage, and wear that can occur during normal driving. Over time these straps and brackets can rust, bend, or crack, which is why replacement is a common maintenance need on older cabover models.

Will this bracket-strap fit my specific International IH cabover model and tank size?

Fit can vary depending on the exact IH cabover model, model year, and the diameter or capacity of the fuel tank installed on your truck. Before ordering, check the listed specifications on the product page, including tank diameter and mounting dimensions, and compare them to your current bracket-strap or tank. If you are unsure, reach out to our parts team with your truck's VIN or model details so we can confirm the correct fit.

What material and finish should I expect, and how well will it hold up over time?

These brackets and straps are typically made from steel and may come with a painted, galvanized, or raw finish depending on the specific part. A protective finish helps resist rust and corrosion, which is especially important given the exposure to road debris, moisture, and salt these components face. If your truck operates in harsh conditions, a galvanized or coated option is generally a good choice for longer service life.

Can I install a fuel tank bracket-strap myself, or should I have a professional do it?

Many drivers and shop technicians replace these brackets and straps themselves, as the job typically involves supporting the fuel tank, removing the old hardware, and bolting the new bracket-strap into place. However, since the fuel tank must be properly supported during the process and correct torque on fasteners matters for long-term safety, if you are not comfortable working under a loaded fuel tank, it is worth having a qualified technician handle the installation.

How do I know it is time to replace my fuel tank bracket-strap instead of repairing it?

Signs that replacement is needed include visible rust or corrosion, cracks or bends in the metal, elongated bolt holes, or noticeable tank movement or noise while driving. Straps and brackets are wear items and are not designed to be repaired once they are structurally compromised, so replacing them promptly helps avoid further damage to the tank or surrounding components.
