Freightliner M2 Business Class Chrome Stacks-Tops

Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner M2 Business Class Chrome Stacks-Tops

What exactly is a stack top and what does it do?

A stack top, sometimes called an exhaust top or rain cap mount, is the chrome-plated cap or top section that fits onto the upper end of your exhaust stack pipe. It finishes off the exhaust system with a polished look while also serving as the mounting point for a rain cap that keeps water out of the stack when the engine is off.

Will these stacks-tops fit my Freightliner M2 without modification?

Stack tops are sized by diameter, so it is important to measure your existing exhaust stack pipe before ordering to confirm you are getting a matching size. Fitment can also vary slightly depending on the model year and whether your M2 has factory or aftermarket exhaust piping, so double-checking the diameter and any listed specifications on the product page is the best way to avoid a fitment issue.

What is the difference between chrome and stainless steel finishes?

Chrome-plated stacks-tops have a mirror-like, highly reflective finish that gives a classic show-truck look, while stainless steel offers a slightly more subdued shine and tends to be more resistant to pitting or discoloration over time. Both finishes are durable for daily use, but chrome typically requires more regular cleaning to maintain that bright, polished appearance, especially with road grime and heat exposure.

How do I install a chrome stack top, and do I need any special tools?

Most stack tops slide or clamp onto the top of the existing exhaust pipe and are secured with set screws or a band clamp, so installation is generally straightforward and can often be done with basic hand tools. Because the stack top sits near the top of a hot exhaust system, we recommend letting the exhaust cool completely before installation and making sure the clamp or screws are tightened securely so the top does not vibrate loose during operation.

How do I keep the chrome finish looking new and prevent rust or discoloration?

Regular washing with mild soap and water, along with a dedicated chrome polish applied periodically, will help keep the surface bright and free of road film or exhaust residue buildup. Since these parts are mounted right at the exhaust outlet, some heat discoloration over time is normal, but staying on top of cleaning and avoiding harsh abrasive pads will extend the life of the finish.
