Freightliner FL70-FL80 Shock Absorbers

Frequently Asked Questions About Freightliner FL70-FL80 Shock Absorbers

How do I know if my Freightliner FL70 or FL80 shock absorbers need to be replaced?

Common signs of worn shock absorbers include excessive bouncing or swaying after hitting bumps, uneven tire wear, visible oil leaks or fluid residue on the shock body, and a rougher than normal ride. If your truck feels less stable during braking or cornering, it is a good idea to have the shocks inspected.

Are these shock absorbers a direct fit for my specific FL70 or FL80 model year?

Freightliner made changes to suspension components across different model years and configurations of the FL70 and FL80, so fitment can vary. Always check the listed specifications, including mounting dimensions and axle position (front or rear), and compare them to your truck's VIN or existing part number before ordering to confirm a proper match.

Should I replace shock absorbers one at a time or in pairs?

Most technicians recommend replacing shocks in pairs, either both front or both rear, even if only one appears worn. Shocks wear gradually over time, and replacing just one can lead to uneven ride quality and handling since the new shock will perform differently than the older one still in place.

What is involved in installing a replacement shock absorber on an FL70 or FL80?

Installation typically involves securing the vehicle, removing the mounting bolts or hardware at the top and bottom of the old shock, and installing the new unit with the correct torque specifications. While the process is straightforward for someone comfortable with basic mechanical work, using a torque wrench and following manufacturer torque specs is important for safety and proper performance.

How long should shock absorbers last on a Freightliner FL70 or FL80?

Shock absorber lifespan depends heavily on usage, load weights, road conditions, and driving habits. Trucks that regularly haul heavy loads or operate on rough terrain will typically see shocks wear out faster than those used primarily on smooth highways. Routine visual inspections during regular maintenance can help catch wear before it becomes a bigger issue.
