Peterbilt 387 Bumpers

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 387 Bumpers

What year models are compatible with Peterbilt 387 bumpers, and will they fit my specific truck?

Peterbilt 387 bumpers are designed for model years 2000-2010. However, compatibility can vary based on your specific configuration. Trucks with set-back axles may require different mounting brackets than set-forward models. Before ordering, check your OEM plate for the exact model year and measure the distance from your front axle to the bumper mounting points. Most aftermarket 387 bumpers will fit standard hood configurations, but trucks with extended hoods or custom modifications may need additional adapters.

What's the difference between chrome steel and stainless steel bumpers, and which holds up better?

Chrome-plated steel bumpers cost less upfront but require more maintenance to prevent rust and pitting, especially in areas with road salt. Stainless steel bumpers (usually 304-grade) resist corrosion naturally and maintain their appearance longer with just regular washing. While stainless costs 40-60% more initially, most drivers find it pays for itself by lasting 10-15 years without major refinishing. For trucks operating in northern climates or coastal areas, stainless steel is strongly recommended.

Can I install a Peterbilt 387 bumper myself, or do I need professional installation?

Installation typically takes 2-4 hours with basic tools and mechanical experience. You'll need a floor jack or lift, socket set, and potentially a helper due to bumper weight (80-120 lbs). The main challenges include aligning mounting brackets properly and reconnecting fog lights or sensors if equipped. Many drivers successfully install these themselves, but professional installation runs $200-400 and ensures proper torque specifications and alignment. If your truck has collision avoidance sensors or complex wiring, professional installation is recommended to maintain warranty coverage.

What mounting hardware comes with the bumper, and what additional parts might I need?

Most quality aftermarket 387 bumpers include basic mounting brackets however, you may need additional items depending on your truck: tow hook adapters ($50-100), fog light brackets ($30-60), or license plate mounting kits ($20-40). Trucks with aftermarket grilles or custom hood configurations often require universal mounting straps or custom brackets. Always verify what's included before ordering, as some budget bumpers come bare and require separate hardware purchases that can add $100-200 to your total cost.

How do aftermarket bumpers affect weight limits and will they work with my existing tow hooks?

Quality aftermarket 387 bumpers typically match OEM weight specifications (80-120 lbs) and maintain the same tow ratings when properly installed. Most feature standard tow hook mounting points that accept factory hooks, though some lightweight aluminum bumpers may have reduced towing capacity. Heavy-duty chrome bumpers can add 20-40 lbs over stock, which rarely affects performance but should be considered for weight-sensitive applications. Always verify the bumper's tow rating matches your needs - standard ratings range from 15,000-30,000 lbs depending on construction.
