Peterbilt 357/378 DPF & Mufflers

Frequently Asked Questions About Peterbilt 357/378 DPF & Mufflers

Will this DPF or muffler fit my Peterbilt 357 or 378 without modification?

Most parts in this category are designed to match the factory dimensions and mounting configuration used on Peterbilt 357 and 378 models, but exact fitment can vary depending on your truck's model year, engine, and original exhaust setup. Be sure to check the listed specifications, including inlet/outlet diameter and overall length, and compare them to your existing unit before ordering. If you're unsure, contact our support team with your VIN or engine details for confirmation.

Is this DPF or muffler compliant with EPA and emissions regulations?

Diesel particulate filters and mufflers in this category are built to meet or match OEM specifications for emissions compliance. However, if your truck operates under specific state or federal emissions programs, it's your responsibility to confirm that any replacement part maintains your vehicle's certified emissions configuration. Always keep documentation of the part installed in case of a DOT or emissions inspection.

What material and finish options are available?

DPFs and mufflers are typically constructed from aluminized or stainless steel, with stainless steel offering better long-term resistance to corrosion and heat cycling. Aluminized options are generally more budget-friendly but may show wear sooner in high-mileage or harsh-weather applications. Product listings note the specific material used so you can choose based on your budget and expected service life.

Can I install this myself, or do I need a professional shop?

Many mufflers can be installed with standard tools and basic exhaust system knowledge, especially if you're replacing a like-for-like part. DPF replacement or servicing is more involved, since it may require resetting or recalibrating the truck's onboard diagnostics and ensuring proper sensor placement. If you're not experienced with diesel exhaust systems, we recommend having a qualified diesel technician handle DPF installation.

How do I know if I need a new DPF versus having mine cleaned?

If your DPF is clogged with soot but structurally sound, a professional cleaning may restore performance and airflow. However, if the filter is cracked, melted, or has failed repeatedly despite cleaning, replacement is usually the better long-term solution. Signs like frequent derates, persistent DPF warning lights, or reduced fuel efficiency are good indicators it's time to inspect the filter closely and decide between cleaning and replacement.
