Mack R Truck Fuel Tanks

Frequently Asked Questions About Mack R Truck Fuel Tanks

Will a replacement fuel tank fit my specific Mack R Model year and configuration?

Mack R Model trucks were produced over several decades with different chassis configurations, so fuel tank shape, mounting strap spacing, and capacity can vary. Always check the tank's dimensions, capacity, and mounting bracket layout against your truck's original tank before purchasing, and reach out to our team with your VIN or truck specs if you are unsure about fit.

What materials are these fuel tanks made from, and which one is best for my truck?

Fuel tanks in this category are typically available in aluminum and steel. Aluminum tanks are lighter and resist corrosion well, making them a popular choice for reducing overall vehicle weight, while steel tanks tend to be more rugged and budget-friendly. The right choice depends on your priorities around weight savings, durability, and cost.

What fuel tank capacities are available, and how do I choose the right size?

Capacities vary by tank model, often ranging from smaller mid-size tanks to larger long-haul capacities. To choose the right size, match the new tank's capacity and mounting configuration to your original tank, and consider your typical routes and refueling needs if you are open to changing capacity.

How difficult is it to install a replacement fuel tank, and can I do it myself?

Installation generally involves disconnecting fuel lines, removing the mounting straps, and transferring or replacing components like the sending unit and fuel cap. Many experienced DIY mechanics can handle this job with basic tools, but because it involves fuel system components, we recommend having a qualified technician complete the installation if you are not comfortable working with fuel lines and tank straps.

Do these fuel tanks come with mounting straps, sending units, and caps included?

This varies by product listing, as some fuel tanks are sold as a bare tank while others may include mounting hardware or a fuel cap. Be sure to check the specific product description for what is included, and plan on reusing or separately sourcing components like the sending unit, straps, or cap if they are not part of the package.
